Slow down gradually rather than stamping on the brakes, since even at six miles long the A3(M) keeps a hard shoulder from Horndean right through to Bedhampton. Once stopped, leave by the doors facing the verge and move well back before ringing anyone. Booking a fitter from there costs from £120.
The A3(M) is a conventional motorway with a hard shoulder along its full six miles. There is no all-lane running and no managed motorway technology on this short Hampshire spur. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.
The A3(M) keeps a hard shoulder along its whole six miles, so move the car there and step well back from the carriageway. Dial 999 if you cannot get clear, or reach National Highways on 0300 123 5000 for anything less urgent. A mobile tyre fit on the A3(M) starts from £120.
The A3(M) is a short Hampshire spur opened in December 1979, bypassing Horndean, Waterlooville and Purbrook on what used to be a slow, congested stretch of the old A3 heading for Portsmouth. Six miles and five junctions carry it from Horndean at junction 1 to Bedhampton at junction 5, where it meets the A27 and hands traffic on toward the M27 and the coast. Junctions 1 and 4 have restricted movements rather than full access in every direction, which is worth knowing if a satnav sends you looking for an exit that is not actually usable from your direction of travel.
There are no motorway service areas on this road, and there never have been; it is too short to justify one. Havant, Waterlooville and Purbrook all sit within a mile or two of the carriageway, and a fitter can reach a car park or residential road off any junction faster than a hard shoulder job on a road this size.
A3(M) Horndean to Bedhampton, 6 miles, J1 Horndean to J5 Bedhampton, through Hampshire, serving Horndean, Waterlooville, Purbrook and Havant.
The southern end has no free-flowing link to the western A27 toward Chichester and Havant town centre, so traffic funnels through a roundabout system instead. Heavy braking and late lane changes into that roundabout are the most common cause of sidewall damage on this road.
Where motorway-standard road meets the ordinary A3 arriving from Petersfield and Guildford. The change in road character catches some drivers out, and debris carried down from the non-motorway stretch tends to collect in the first mile.
This stretch was built to take Waterlooville's retail and housing traffic off the old road, and local trips joining and leaving at junctions 2 and 3 mix with through traffic running at full motorway speed, which is where most of the road's minor scrapes and kerbing happen.
If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

One quoted figure covers callout and labour, with the tyre's cost shown on top before you say yes, and nothing else added later. Between 23:00 and 07:00 a 1.5x multiplier applies to that base figure, the reason 24 hour tyre fitting on the A3(M) can run through the night for a short but busy commuter link.
| Service | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile tyre change, supply and fit | From £120 | The tyre is priced separately at cost. Common car sizes are held for the Havant and Waterlooville area given how close this spur sits to Portsmouth. |
| Fit the spare you already carry | From £80 | With no services on the road itself, fitting a spare is often the quickest way to reach Havant, Waterlooville or the A27 under your own power. |
| Puncture repair | From £60 | Applies only within the central repair zone set out in British Standard AU159, and only if tread is still above the legal minimum. |
| Locking wheel nut removal | From £70 | For a missing or rounded key. Extraction starts with a non-destructive method before anything more forceful is tried. |
As soon as you sense a problem, hazards on. Ease off steadily rather than braking hard, letting the A3(M) itself slow the car as you drift toward the nearside.
Get onto the shoulder as far as it allows, turning the front wheels toward the verge so a rear-end impact is deflected away from the running lanes.
Every occupant exits through the nearside doors, driver included, never stepping directly into a live lane.
Move beyond the barrier and stand forward of the car. This stretch's embankments are shallow and grassed, generally easy to clear properly.
Call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 and give your junction number, for example J2 for Waterlooville. Dial 999 first if you cannot get clear of the vehicle.
Once you are safely behind the barrier, book in the app. GPS fixes your position on a short road where junctions come up quickly, so there is no need to guess a marker post.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
This road exists mainly to move daily commuter and dockyard traffic between Waterlooville, Havant and Portsmouth, and repeated short trips wear the inner tyre shoulder well before the outer edge shows anything.
Junctions 2 and 3 carry a steady flow of local trips to and from Waterlooville's shopping and housing areas, mixed with drivers running at full motorway speed further along the same short stretch.
The lower ground near junction 5 collects surface water in heavy rain, and driving through standing water at speed is a common cause of sudden tyre and wheel damage on this stretch.
Portsmouth and the surrounding coast draw extra holiday traffic through the summer months, adding fully loaded family cars to the usual commuter flow on a road that otherwise runs fairly consistently all year.
There are no service areas on the A3(M), so Havant, Waterlooville and Purbrook are the practical alternatives. All three sit within a mile or two of a junction, and a fitter working in a car park there is safer and usually faster than a hard shoulder job on a six-mile spur.
Coverage around Portsmouth and Havant is good, with fitters based across the wider conurbation. Target arrival on a short, busy commuter road like this tends to be quick, though it remains a target rather than a guarantee.
The limit is measured across the central three quarters of the tread width, all the way around the tyre, not at a single spot.
Up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre, not per car. DVSA enforcement around the Portsmouth and Havant area is routine.
A cut, bulge or exposed cord is an immediate MOT failure regardless of tread depth, and it is never repairable.
Yes. A hard shoulder runs the full six miles from Horndean to Bedhampton, and TowManVan fitters work there when it is safe to do so. Wait behind the barrier while the wheel is changed.
Phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000 once you are safely behind the barrier, quoting your junction, anywhere from J1 to J5. Unable to get out of the car at all? 999 comes first, before anything else.
It is not an offence, but National Highways advises against it. On a short, busy road like the A3(M), a driver at the offside wheel is close to fast-moving traffic with little room to move into.
From £120 for a roadside change including callout and labour, with the tyre charged at cost and shown before you confirm. Fitting your own spare is from £80, and a repair from £60 where the damage allows.
That situation should not arise. A hard shoulder runs the entire six miles of the A3(M). If your vehicle has stopped in a running lane rather than the shoulder, call 999 immediately.
Yes. Waterlooville, Purbrook and Havant all sit within a mile or two of the A3(M) and are covered as part of the same callout area, which matters given there are no services on the spur itself.
Your location comes from GPS, so you do not have to read a marker post. The price is fixed before you confirm and you track the fitter in.
iOS and Android from the 1st of October 2026. No membership, no annual fee and no account charge. You only pay when you book a job.
The fixed price is shown before you confirm, not after the work. Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay are handled in-app, so no cash changes hands at the kerb.
Once a job is accepted you see the driver's name, vehicle and live position on the map, with an arrival time that updates as they travel.
Every operator is DBS checked, insured for hire and reward, and rated after each job. Prices are fixed before dispatch, never quoted as a range.
Own a van or recovery truck? Take jobs through the same appMotorway tyre work is under-served, and a corridor like the A3(M) runs around the clock. Fitters keep 90 percent of every job for their first twelve months, with no joining fee, no weekly subscription, no bidding and no charge for jobs you decline. You set your own radius and hours.
