Slow down without grabbing the brakes and aim for the shoulder, which runs the full two miles between the M4 and St Mellons, though it is narrower than a standard motorway margin. Step out on the verge side and move well clear before making a call. A fitter reaching you costs from £120.
The A48(M) is a conventional dual carriageway motorway with narrow hard shoulders along its two miles. There is no all-lane running here. It is maintained by the South Wales Trunk Road Agent on behalf of the Welsh Government rather than National Highways, which only operates the strategic road network in England. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.
A narrow hard shoulder runs the full two miles of the A48(M): get onto it and stand clear, well away from passing traffic. This Welsh spur falls outside National Highways, so dial 999 for anything serious; their number, 0300 123 5000, can still redirect you. Fitting on the A48(M) starts from £120.
The A48(M) is a two-mile motorway spur linking the M4 at junction 29, near Castleton on the eastern edge of Newport, to junction 29A at St Mellons on the eastern side of Cardiff. It opened in 1977 and has no other junctions between those points, one of the shortest and simplest motorways covered on this site. At St Mellons the road runs straight into the ordinary dual carriageway A48, Eastern Avenue, continuing into central Cardiff.
There are no service areas on the spur itself, and there never have been on a road this short. What makes it worth covering on its own is the traffic it carries: Newport and Cardiff commuter traffic avoiding the M4's own city-adjacent junctions, plus through freight cutting across to the A48 rather than continuing into central Cardiff on the M4.
A48(M) Cardiff Spur, 2 miles, J29 Castleton to J29A St Mellons, through Newport and Cardiff, South Wales.
Traffic peeling off the M4 at speed onto a short two-mile spur has little distance to settle. Late lane changes right at the merge are the most common cause of minor sidewall damage here.
Built in 1977, the A48(M) carries a hard shoulder that is noticeably narrower than a modern motorway standard, continuing the same narrow-shoulder profile as the A48 dual carriageway it joins. There is less margin for a fitter and a stopped vehicle to work in than on a newer road.
Where the motorway ends and the road becomes an ordinary A48 dual carriageway running into Cardiff. The change in road type and the traffic joining from St Mellons itself both concentrate late braking and lane changes right at this point.
If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.
| Service area | Between |

Callout and labour come as a single quoted figure, no add-on fee waiting at the end. The tyre's cost sits on top, shown before you commit. A 1.5x multiplier lifts the base rate between 23:00 and 07:00, which keeps 24 hour tyre fitting on the A48(M) running for Newport and Cardiff traffic at any hour.
| Service | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile tyre change, supply and fit | From £120 | Cost price covers the tyre itself, on top of this. Common sizes are held for the Newport and Cardiff area given how short a run this spur is between the two cities. |
| Fit the spare you already carry | From £80 | With no services on the spur itself, fitting a spare is usually the quickest way to reach Cardiff Gate services on the M4 or the streets around St Mellons. |
| Puncture repair | From £60 | Limited to damage within the tyre's central repairable zone under British Standard AU159, with legal tread depth remaining either side. |
| Locking wheel nut removal | From £70 | A lost or rounded key is handled with a non-destructive extraction method first, before anything more forceful. |
The instant something feels wrong, hazards on. Ease off rather than stamping the brakes, letting the A48(M) itself slow the car as you drift toward the nearside.
Get onto the shoulder as far as its narrower width allows, turning the front wheels toward the verge so a rear impact is deflected clear of the running lanes.
Every occupant leaves through the nearside doors, driver included, staying well clear given how tight the margin is on this road's shoulder.
Cross the barrier and stand forward of the car. Verges along this short spur are generally shallow enough to reach properly.
This is a Welsh trunk road, not part of the English strategic network, so dial 999 for anything urgent. National Highways on 0300 123 5000 can still help direct you if you are unsure who to call.
Once you are behind the barrier, book in the app. GPS fixes your position precisely on a short road where junction 29 and junction 29A are the only two reference points.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
This spur exists to move traffic between the two cities without routing through the M4's own city-adjacent junctions, carrying a dense daily flow of commuter and delivery vehicles making that trip.
Hauliers moving goods toward the A48 corridor rather than continuing on the M4 use this spur as the more direct route, adding heavier vehicles to a road built to a narrower 1970s standard than the motorway either side of it.
This stretch sits open to weather coming off the Severn estuary, and sudden cold snaps drop tyre pressures on cars that have sat outside overnight before the morning commute.
International rugby and other major events at Cardiff's central venues push extra traffic through the wider Newport to Cardiff corridor, including this spur, well beyond the road's usual daily commuter volume.
There are no services on the A48(M) itself. Cardiff Gate services, on the M4 at junction 30, is the nearest proper service area, and the streets around St Mellons and Castleton offer a realistic alternative for a car that can still be driven there under its own power.
Coverage across Newport and Cardiff is strong given the density of the surrounding conurbation, and a fitter reaching either end of this short spur is usually quick, though arrival remains a target rather than a guarantee.
Checked across the central three quarters of the tread width and the full circumference, identical to the standard south of the border in England.
Up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre, not per vehicle, with enforcement around the Newport and Cardiff area routine.
A cut, bulge or exposed cord is an immediate MOT failure regardless of tread depth, and it is never repairable.
Yes. A hard shoulder runs the full two miles from J29 to J29A, though it is narrower than a standard motorway shoulder. TowManVan fitters work there when it is safe to do so, with everyone waiting behind the barrier.
Dial 999 for anything urgent, since this Welsh trunk road is not part of the English strategic network that National Highways manages. National Highways on 0300 123 5000 can still help if you are unsure who else to contact.
It is not an offence, but it is not advised. On a short, busy spur like the A48(M), a driver at the offside wheel is close to fast-moving traffic with little room to move into, which is why getting behind the barrier and calling a fitter is safer.
From £120 for a roadside change including callout and labour, with the tyre charged at cost and shown before you confirm. Fitting your own spare is from £80, and a repair from £60 where the damage allows.
That situation should not arise. A hard shoulder, though narrow, runs the entire two miles of the A48(M). If your vehicle has stopped in a running lane rather than on the shoulder, call 999 immediately.
Yes. The A48(M) connects directly to the M4 at junction 29, and TowManVan covers both roads, so a callout does not stop at the point where one becomes the other.
Your location comes from GPS, so you do not have to read a marker post. The price is fixed before you confirm and you track the fitter in.
