The M20 retains a conventional hard shoulder for most of its length, but Operation Brock barriers can remove it entirely across long stretches at short notice. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before.

The M20 is the main artery to the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone and, via the A20, to the Port of Dover. That gives it a traffic mix unlike anywhere else in Britain: a high proportion of heavy international freight, plus holiday traffic running fully laden to the crossings.
The complicating factor is Operation Brock. When cross-Channel freight backs up, a contraflow system is deployed on the M20 using moveable concrete barriers, typically between J8 and J9, holding lorries on the coastbound carriageway while other traffic runs contraflow. It changes the road fundamentally.
Under Brock there is effectively no hard shoulder in the affected sections, lanes are narrowed, and there are concrete barriers close on both sides. A tyre failure inside a Brock contraflow leaves you nowhere at all, and the barriers make it hard for a recovery vehicle to reach you from either direction.
Narrow lanes with close barriers also cause tyre damage rather than merely complicating it. Kerbing a sidewall against a concrete barrier at speed is one of the most common causes of tyre failure in any contraflow, and sidewall damage is never repairable.
Freight tyre debris is the other M20 signature. International HGVs running long distances shed tread, and a strip of lorry tread at 60mph will destroy a car tyre and often damage the bodywork with it.
Maidstone services between J8 and J9 is the only service area on the road, which given the Brock deployment zone sits in almost exactly the same place is not as useful as it sounds.
The M20's other complication is informational. Whether Operation Brock is deployed, and where, changes week to week with cross-Channel demand, and a driver who used the road a fortnight ago may have no idea that the section they are entering now has concrete barriers down both sides. That uncertainty is itself a hazard: it means people plan a stop that turns out not to exist.
It is also the reason the usual advice inverts here. On almost every motorway the instruction is to get out of the vehicle and behind a barrier. Inside a Brock contraflow there is no behind: the barrier is the edge of the world, with a live lane on the other side of it. Staying belted in with hazards on, while Kent control manages the lane, is frequently the safer choice, and it is worth knowing that before you are in it.

If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

If the tyre goes at speed, do not brake hard. Ease off, hold the wheel straight and let the M20 slow you. Junctions are reasonably spaced on the M20, but when Operation Brock is deployed the contraflow barriers mean you may not be able to reach an exit at all from inside the affected section.
If you cannot reach an exit, get as far onto the verge as the surface allows. Turn the front wheels to the left so any impact pushes the vehicle away from the carriageway rather than into it.
Hazard lights straight away. Everyone leaves through the passenger doors, driver included. Never open a door into a live lane, and leave pets in the car unless it is unsafe to.
Inside a Brock contraflow there is no verge and no embankment, only concrete on both sides. That is the one situation where staying in the vehicle with hazards on may be safest until the lane is managed.

Once you are behind the barrier, book in the app. GPS fixes your position on the M20 to within a few metres, so you do not have to read a marker post or guess a junction number in the dark.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
The M20 carries the UK's densest concentration of continental freight, much of it having run several hundred miles before reaching Kent. Tyres at sustained working temperature that long fail from existing weaknesses, and a shed tread strip from a 44 tonne artic will destroy a car tyre and often the arch liner with it.
Loaded family cars, roof boxes and towed trailers heading for Folkestone and Dover run at the top of their load rating. Unlike an airport run they then drive onto a continental road network with different rules, so the tyre needs to be right for more than the M20.
Between J1 and J8 the road serves Maidstone and the Medway towns, picking up local commuting and agricultural movements. Farm traffic brings flint and stone onto the carriageway, which cuts rather than punctures.
July and August bring the heaviest laden holiday traffic alongside continuing freight. When Brock is deployed in the same window, the two combine into the least forgiving conditions on the road.
Brock is demand-driven rather than seasonal and can appear at short notice. When it does, the hard shoulder disappears behind moveable concrete barriers across long stretches, and recovery access is restricted from both directions.
