Steer onto the hard shoulder and stop tight against the nearside verge, which this link gives you along all five of its miles. Everybody leaves through the doors facing away from traffic and waits beyond the barrier. Make the call after that. Fitting on the M49 begins at £120 before the tyre.
Two running lanes each way and a hard shoulder from end to end. Nothing here was taken into all-lane running and no signal gantries stand over it, so the nearside strip is a genuine refuge. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.
Bring the car onto the M49 hard shoulder, empty it through the left-hand doors and stand past the barrier before phoning anybody. Phone 0300 123 5000 to reach National Highways, or 999 where somebody cannot get out. Fitting a tyre on the M49 begins at £120, the tyre itself charged at cost.
The M49 is five miles long and does one job. It leaves the M5 at junction 18a behind Avonmouth, crosses the flat Severnside levels and ties into the M4 at junction 22, a short distance east of the Prince of Wales Bridge. Two lanes each way since 1996, on a heavy-duty pavement built for lorries.
One feature matters when a tyre goes. This road spent most of its life with no junction of its own. One was built near the Western Approach distribution park, but it has never been joined to the surrounding roads and stays closed. Nothing has changed for drivers: no exit between the two motorways, no service area, open farmland either side.
M49 Avonmouth link, 5 miles, M5 J18a at Avonmouth to M4 J22, with no usable junction in between, through South Gloucestershire, crossing the Severnside levels north west of Bristol.
Everything bound for Avonmouth and the Royal Portbury terminal funnels through here. Container work loads axles heavily, and a casing that delaminates leaves slabs of tread against the nearside line. Meeting one at seventy costs a sidewall.
No working exit sits between the two motorways. A driver whose steering has gone heavy cannot pull off and think it over, so the instinct is to press on. A few miles run flat wrecks the casing and generally the rim beneath it.
Traffic merges onto a crossing approach already at speed, then sorts itself for Wales. Late lane changes across whatever has gathered on the edge line are how tread blocks get sliced, and the damage often shows up on the bridge.
If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

No callout charge sits on top of these figures; reaching you is priced in already. Tyres are supplied at what they cost, listed on the screen before you say yes. Jobs beginning after 23:00 and up to 07:00 carry a 1.5 factor on the base rate, openly stated because most 24 hour tyre fitting on the M49 serves the night shift.
| Service | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile tyre change, supply and fit | From £120 | Covers travel and labour, the rubber extra. Avonmouth and Filton keep ordinary car and van fitments nearby, so stock is closer than this empty road suggests. |
| Fit the spare you already carry | From £80 | Where a serviceable wheel is riding in the boot. With nothing to turn off at, getting mobile again is the quickest route to somewhere better. |
| Puncture repair | From £60 | Possible where the hole sits in the middle zone BS AU159 allows and depth remains legal. Anything through the shoulder disqualifies it. |
| Locking wheel nut removal | From £70 | For a key nobody can find, or a head chewed round under a brace. The stud is protected wherever possible and a new nut supplied. |
Hazards on immediately. Lift off the throttle rather than braking hard, because the flat corner tugs the steering that way. Two lanes and a shoulder mean there is always somewhere to aim.
Bring it as near the verge edge as the surface will take, wheels pointed at the grass rather than the carriageway. On ground this exposed, nothing should stand near the white line.
The driver climbs over rather than opening a door towards moving traffic. Keys and phones come too. Leave a dog in the vehicle unless staying there is the worse risk.
Climb the bank and cross the barrier so it sits between your family and the traffic, then stand forward of the vehicle.
Speak to National Highways before you book anything: 0300 123 5000. No junction numbers exist to describe yourself by, so read the nearest marker post and name the motorway you were heading for. An orange SOS telephone reachable on foot does that by itself. Anyone trapped inside makes it a 999 call first. The fitter comes last, and the time quoted is an estimate to aim at.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
Freight came first here and still dominates. Containers off the docks and trunk loads from the Severnside warehouses run this link on casings covering huge distances between inspections. With two lanes, the car behind has little room to steer round what lands.
The estates at Avonmouth and Western Approach work in shifts, so cars and light vans use the road at three in the morning as readily as mid afternoon. Short repeated hops rarely prompt a pressure check.
These are drained levels with nothing to break the weather. Water stands on the carriageway after heavy rain, and aquaplaning finds a tyre short of depth long before the legal limit does.
Surface breakup gathers where the link meets the M5 and the M4, on slips that absorb constant heavy braking. Strikes there usually raise a swelling in the sidewall instead of piercing it, and nothing swollen can be repaired.
The M49 carries no service area at all. The closest proper stops are Severn View on the M48 at junction 1 by Aust, and Gordano on the M5 at junction 19 towards Portishead. Neither is on your way if you are only crossing between the two motorways.
For a car that still rolls, aim at the industrial estates around Avonmouth or the retail parks at Cribbs Causeway: minutes away, lit, and free of traffic passing at seventy. Cover comes from Avonmouth, Severn Beach, Filton and Portishead, and every window quoted is an aim rather than a promise.
Depth must hold right around the tyre and over the central three quarters of its width. Small bars sit in the groove floors at that exact height, so tread flush with them is at the limit already, not close to it.
One illegal tyre can bring a fine reaching £2,500 along with three penalty points, and each corner counts as its own offence. A set of four stops being a fine and turns into a ban.
A split, a swelling or cord showing through means an outright fail, no matter what the tread gauge says. Kerb strikes on the slips at either end supply most of it here.
Yes. A hard shoulder runs all five miles and no part of the road has been converted, so a TowManVan fitter works at the roadside wherever the position is safe. Passengers stay past the barrier throughout.
Start with National Highways: the line is 0300 123 5000. Should an orange SOS telephone stand within walking distance, it reports the same information at no cost. Somebody unable to leave the car dials 999 instead.
No law forbids it. Official advice discourages it anyway, and this link shows why: dock traffic on two lanes leaves no third lane for a lorry to move into, so working at the outer wheel puts you a stride from passing traffic.
£120 upward buys the visit, the labour and a tyre charged at cost, quoted before you commit. Bolting on the spare you carry is £80 upward, mending one £60 where the injury allows. After 23:00 a 1.5 factor applies.
Every part of it has one. The M49 was never converted, so the layout is identical from the M5 to the M4. Stopped in a live lane regardless, ring 999 and do not move the car.
Because it has never opened. The junction near Western Approach was built but never joined to the local road network, so it stays shut and the link still has no exit of its own.
Your location comes from GPS, so you do not have to read a marker post. The price is fixed before you confirm and you track the fitter in.
iOS and Android from the 1st of October 2026. No membership, no annual fee and no account charge. You only pay when you book a job.
The fixed price is shown before you confirm, not after the work. Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay are handled in-app, so no cash changes hands at the kerb.
Once a job is accepted you see the driver's name, vehicle and live position on the map, with an arrival time that updates as they travel.
Every operator is DBS checked, insured for hire and reward, and rated after each job. Prices are fixed before dispatch, never quoted as a range.
