The highest motorway in England crosses the Pennines at 1,221 feet. Weather, gradient and exposure make an M62 tyre failure a different problem from a flat in a city.
The M62 has all-lane-running sections including J10 to J12 near Warrington and around J18 to J20 on the Manchester side, where the hard shoulder is a live running lane. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call 999. National Highways can close the lane from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before.

The M62 is the only motorway that crosses England coast to coast, and the middle of it is genuinely upland road. Windy Hill between J22 and J23 is the highest point on the English motorway network at 1,221 feet, higher than anything on the M6, and the name is not decorative.
Exposure is the defining feature. The Pennine section is open moorland with almost no shelter, and crosswinds regularly force restrictions on high-sided vehicles. A crosswind loads one side of a vehicle harder than the other, which is exactly the condition an under-inflated tyre handles worst.
Cold is the second factor. Tyre pressure falls by roughly 1 to 2 psi for every 10 degrees Celsius drop, and the summit is reliably several degrees colder than either coast. A tyre set correctly in Liverpool can be measurably softer by Saddleworth, and under-inflation is the most common contributor to motorway tyre failure.
The urban ends have the opposite problem. J10 to J12 near Warrington and the J18 to J20 Manchester section run as all-lane running with the hard shoulder in use, and they carry dense freight from the North West logistics parks. That combination puts shed tread in lane one and leaves nowhere to stop when you drive over it.
There is a long gap between Hartshead Moor and Ferrybridge on the Yorkshire side, and another between Birch and Hartshead Moor over the tops. If you are losing pressure slowly rather than suddenly, deal with it at the services rather than committing to the moorland crossing.
The M62 also has an unusual driver population. It is one of the few motorways where a large proportion of users cross it daily as a commute rather than occasionally as a journey, moving between Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield and Manchester. Familiarity breeds a particular kind of risk on the Pennine section: drivers who cross it every day in fair weather underestimate how quickly conditions change on the tops, and carry on at normal speeds into standing water or ice on tyres that are legal but well below the 3mm where wet performance holds up.
It is also worth understanding what the road does to a tyre that is already marginal. The climb from either coast is sustained rather than intermittent, so a tyre spends twenty minutes under continuous load rather than cycling between load and rest as it would in traffic. That continuous cycle is what turns a small internal separation into a failure, and it is why M62 blowouts so often happen to tyres that passed a visual check that morning.

Dense commuter and freight mixing where the M62 meets the M60. Frequent lane changes and close barriers produce sidewall kerbing, which is never repairable.
The first stretch of the M62 to be affected by snow and ice. A tyre failure here is an exposure risk before it is a mechanical one, and standing on an open embankment in Pennine winter weather carries its own danger.
Traffic thins considerably east of Ferrybridge and operator density falls with it. If a tyre is worrying you, resolve it at Ferrybridge rather than pressing on toward the East Riding.
The eastern low-lying sections take crosswind off open country with little shelter, and the surface holds standing water in heavy rain. Both conditions punish tyres already down on tread or pressure.
Where the trans-Pennine route meets the Manchester ring. Dense weaving over short distances with barriers close to the running lanes, which produces sidewall kerbing rather than tread punctures.
If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

If the tyre goes at speed, do not brake hard. Ease off, hold the wheel straight and let the M62 slow you. Over the Pennines between J22 and J24 the exits are far apart and the gradients are severe. If you are on the tops and losing pressure, Hartshead Moor or Birch is a better target than the next junction.
If you cannot reach an exit, get as far onto the verge as the surface allows. Turn the front wheels to the left so any impact pushes the vehicle away from the carriageway rather than into it.
Hazard lights straight away. Everyone leaves through the passenger doors, driver included. Never open a door into a live lane, and leave pets in the car unless it is unsafe to.
On the moorland section the wind and cold are a genuine hazard. If the vehicle is fully off the carriageway and it is safe, staying inside with hazards on may be the better call, which reverses the usual advice.
J10 to J12 near Warrington and J18 to J20 on the Manchester side have no hard shoulder. The North West control centre can close a lane, and on the Pennine section they also manage weather closures.
Once you are behind the barrier, book in the app. GPS fixes your position on the M62 to within a few metres, so you do not have to read a marker post or guess a junction number in the dark.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
The M62 is the only motorway crossing of the Pennines, so all east-west freight between the North West ports and Yorkshire uses it. Loaded artics climbing to 1,221 feet and descending the other side generate more heat in their tyres than almost any flat route, and casing failures shed tread onto a road where there is often nowhere to stop.
Leeds to Manchester and Bradford to Huddersfield commuting means high annual mileage on the same stretch. Tyres wear the inner shoulder from sustained camber, and drivers who check the outer edge see plenty of tread while the inner edge has reached the limit.
Light commercial traffic around Ferrybridge and the M1 interchange runs heavily loaded and often on part-worn tyres, which are legal to sell but frequently have hidden internal damage. A van tyre failing under load on a gradient is a harder event than a car puncture.
The Pennine section is the first English motorway to close for snow and the last to reopen. Between Windy Hill and Scammonden, black ice forms on the exposed spans before anywhere else, and stopping on an icy hard shoulder is dangerous for everyone approaching.
Windy Hill earns the name. Crosswind restrictions on high-sided vehicles are frequent throughout the year, not just in winter, and side loading is hardest on a tyre already low on pressure from the altitude and the cold.
Failures spike sharply on the first genuinely cold day. Pressure falls 1 to 2 psi per 10 degrees Celsius, and the summit is reliably several degrees colder than either coast, so a tyre set in Liverpool can be measurably soft by Saddleworth.
Pennine rainfall is heavy year-round and the moorland sections drain across the carriageway rather than off it. Aquaplaning risk rises steeply below 3mm of tread even though 1.6mm remains the legal figure.
Coverage is strong at both ends and thin in the middle, which mirrors the population. Liverpool, Warrington and Manchester serve the western half with good stock depth; Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield cover the east.
The moorland crossing itself has no operators based on it. A fitter reaching Windy Hill is coming from Rochdale, Oldham or Huddersfield, and in winter conditions that journey takes longer than the map suggests. Arrival estimates in the app reflect the accepting operator's actual position rather than an average.
Birch and Hartshead Moor bracket the Pennine section and are the two places worth treating as decision points. If you are aware of a vibration, a pull or a slow deflation, dealing with it at either beats committing to the crossing between them.
Legal minimum is 1.6mm, but wet braking degrades sharply below 3mm and the M62 has more standing water than most motorways. On the Pennine section the gap between legal and safe is wider than anywhere else on the network.
The UK has no winter tyre requirement, but cold-weather compounds stay flexible below 7 degrees Celsius and make a genuine difference on the tops in January. There is no insurance penalty for fitting them.
Part-worns are legal to sell but must be marked, must have at least 2mm and must be free of structural damage. Surveys have repeatedly found large proportions sold non-compliant, and a hidden internal fault fails under exactly the sustained load a Pennine climb applies.
The 1.6mm minimum applies across the central three quarters of the width. Commuter mileage on cambered motorway wears the inner edge first, so a tread gauge on the outer shoulder gives a falsely comfortable reading.

If you are safely off the carriageway, staying in the vehicle with hazards on may be safer than standing on an open embankment in wind and cold, which is the opposite of the usual advice. There is no legal requirement in the UK, but if you cross the Pennines daily through winter they are worth considering. Cold-weather compounds stay flexible below 7 degrees Celsius, which is most of the time at 1,221 feet between November and March, and they improve braking on cold wet tarmac as well as on snow.
