Scroll any eBay furniture category and you will see it: a solid oak wardrobe at £40, a barely used treadmill at £80, a corner sofa for £50. The photos are fine, the seller has good feedback, and yet nobody is bidding. The reason is two words in the listing: collection only.

Most bidders do not own a van, and hiring one for a single trip feels like more hassle than the item is worth. So the pool of serious buyers shrinks to people who happen to live nearby with a big enough vehicle - and prices collapse. That is exactly your opening. When booking a van takes 60 seconds and a typical collection costs £70-£90, that £40 wardrobe still lands well under what the same piece costs new or from a delivery-included seller.

The maths works best on bulky, heavy, well-made items: the kind that cost a fortune to courier and so almost always get listed collection only. Bid on what everyone else scrolls past, then let a driver do the collecting.

Collection-only sellers are usually clearing space: a house move, a renovation, a garage that needs to be empty by the weekend. Many listings say collect within 3 days, and sellers who hear nothing often cancel the sale and relist rather than wait. A won auction is not a held item - it is a countdown.

The fix is simple: message the seller as soon as you win, agree a collection window, then book the van. With same-day availability and average arrival of 20-30 minutes in covered cities, you can often collect the same afternoon you won the auction. Give your driver the seller's postcode, a phone number, and your eBay order details, and they handle the doorstep handover - you do not even need to be there.

One honest caveat on distance: the first 15 miles are included, then a per-mile rate applies. A bargain 40 miles away can still be a bargain, but check the total in the app before you bid, not after you have won. The price you see is fixed before you confirm - no bidding for your own delivery, no quotes to chase, no renegotiation when the driver sees the stairs.

The weak point of any collection-only purchase is that once the item leaves the seller's driveway, disputes get harder. So build the check into the collection. In your booking notes, tell the driver what to verify: the dimensions from the listing, any damage the photos showed (or did not show), whether an appliance powers on, whether flat-pack items come with their fixings.

Drivers photograph the item at pickup as standard. If something clearly does not match the listing - a cracked frame the photos hid, a missing cushion, a treadmill that will not start - the driver calls you before loading, and you choose: take it anyway, negotiate with the seller over the phone, or walk away. Paying for an hour of a driver's time beats paying to transport something you would only send back.

For appliances, ask the seller to disconnect and defrost ahead of the collection window. For anything upstairs at the seller's end, say so in the booking notes so the right crew arrives - a second helper at £12/hour is the difference between a 10-minute load and a stuck stairwell.
