Why Enfield's commuter car parks produce so many flat batteries

The station car parks at Enfield Town, Enfield Chase and Southbury are where the borough's flat batteries collect. All three hold vehicles for the full working day, and what kills the battery is not the parking itself but the journeys either side of it. A mile or two from a Bush Hill Park or Chase Side street to the car park leaves the engine barely warm and gives the alternator nowhere near enough running time to replace the charge the starter motor has just taken out. Repeat that twice a day, five days a week, through a cold January, and the state of charge drifts down until one evening the engine turns over slowly and then not at all. Two things stack on top in Enfield. A station car park is open, unsheltered ground, so the vehicle sits at ambient temperature all day rather than tucked in the lee of a house. And these are exactly the car parks people leave a car in for a fortnight's holiday. If your battery is over three years old and your commute is a short hop to the platform, it is living on borrowed time.

Brimsdown, Enfield Lock and the Lee Valley: why trade vans fail on Monday morning

The eastern edge of Enfield is light-industrial and trade territory, and a working van has a battery problem a private car does not. It carries load the manufacturer never fitted: a tail lift that draws heavily every time it cycles, roof beacons, interior LED bars, a tracker unit, a dash camera left in parking mode, sometimes an inverter for tools. Most of that kit keeps pulling a small current after the ignition is off, and a tracker in particular is designed never to sleep. Park that van on a yard at Brimsdown on a Friday evening and leave it until Monday, and the parasitic drain has had sixty hours to work on a battery that was probably not full to begin with. Add a diesel engine, which needs considerably more cranking current than a petrol one, and a cold Monday start, and you have the most predictable callout of the week in EN3. The fixed £49 gets the van earning again the same morning, and the free health check tells you whether the battery is coping with the load or losing the fight.

03

Do I need a new battery, or just a jump start?

This is the question every driver asks the moment the engine catches, and the honest answer is that a jump start on its own proves nothing: almost any battery will accept enough charge to turn an engine once. What tells you the truth is what it does afterwards, which is why every TowManVan job in Enfield includes a free battery health check before the engineer leaves. Two readings matter. Cold cranking amps, measured against the figure stamped on the battery, show whether the unit can still deliver what it was built to deliver: well below its rating means it is worn out inside and will fail again on the next cold morning no matter how well it is charged. State of charge tells you the other half of the story, separating a battery that is simply flat from short journeys, a sidelight left on overnight, or a door not quite shut in a car park, from one that is finished. A healthy battery that is merely discharged will hold once you give it a proper half-hour run. One failing on cold cranking amps needs replacing, and you will hear that plainly rather than after a second callout. If it will not hold at all, recovery to a garage is available and priced separately.

04

One borough, two parking patterns, and the 12V battery nobody expects

Enfield's flat batteries follow the parking map as closely as they follow the weather. On the northern and western side, through Grange Park, Winchmore Hill and the roads running out towards Enfield Chase and Clay Hill, most houses have a driveway and many households run two or three cars. The one that fails is rarely the daily driver: it is the second or third vehicle sitting on the drive between weekend uses, discharging quietly for a fortnight at a time. Move south and east into Edmonton and Ponders End, where the housing is terraces, conversions and flats and parking is dense and on-street, and a car can genuinely stand unmoved for a week because the space it is in is worth keeping. Different streets, same ending: a battery that has not been properly recharged in days. The other Enfield failure worth naming is the 12V auxiliary battery in an electric or hybrid car. It sits apart from the traction pack and wakes everything else, dash, door locks, ignition and electronics, so losing it leaves the car showing nothing at all with most of the range still on the clock. Covered at the same fixed £49.

Reviews from Enfield

“Came back to the car park at Enfield Chase after a full day in town and the car was completely dead, not even a dash light. Engineer was with me in about 25 minutes with a proper booster pack. Started first turn, then he tested it and told me the battery was fine, just flattened by short runs to the station.”
HKHannah K.EN2 Enfield Chase station car park · Jan 2026
“Monday morning, van dead on the yard at Brimsdown with a full day of drops booked. He pointed out the tail lift and the tracker were eating the battery over the weekend, got me going and did the cranking amps test there and then. £49 and I was out on the road before nine.”
DADean A.EN3 Brimsdown · Mar 2026
“My hybrid went completely dead in Enfield Town, no locks, no dash, nothing. I assumed it was the big battery and thought it would cost a fortune. The engineer explained it was the little 12V one, jumped it, and charged me the same £49 as any other car. Genuinely relieved.”
RMRosa M.EN1 Enfield Town · Nov 2025
“Car had sat on our street in Ponders End for over a week because parking is impossible and I did not want to lose the space. Would not start on a cold morning. Jumped it in minutes, then the health check showed the battery was well down on cranking amps, so I knew to replace it rather than wait for it to strand me again.”
