Man and Van in Eltham - What You Need to Know

01

Eltham High Street and the Station Bridge

The High Street carries shops, buses and the railway bridge in close succession, and its bays turn over constantly with loading restrictions running through most of the working day. The bridge itself narrows the road and rules out anything tall, so a Luton heading for a flat above the parade waits on a side street rather than the High Street itself. A small or medium van collecting a single item can usually manage a brief stop in the loading bay, but anything longer holds up the queue that builds behind it within a minute, and the parade's own deliveries already take the bay for much of the morning.

02

The Well Hall Roundabout

Where Well Hall Road meets the A2, traffic circulates fast with slip roads feeding the trunk road and no stopping permitted anywhere on the junction itself. A moving van never treats the roundabout as a stopping point, and a job either side of it is timed around the queues that build heavily at the peaks rather than through them. Drivers routing to a Well Hall address plan the approach from a side road off the junction rather than attempting to load from the gyratory, which simply offers no safe position at any point along its length.

03

The A2 in Its Cutting

The relief road runs below the surrounding streets in a cutting, crossed by bridges rather than joined by ordinary junctions, and getting from one side to the other means using one of a handful of slip roads rather than the direct line a map suggests. A move with an origin and destination on opposite sides of the cutting takes noticeably longer to drive between than the distance implies, so the crew confirms which side each address actually falls on before the van leaves rather than discovering it partway through the day. Close on a map and close by road are two different things here.

04

Sidcup Road and the A20 Corridor

The A20 crosses the southern part of the district at dual carriageway speed, with few places to pull in and slip roads that appear with little warning. It is not a road a moving van uses for anything beyond passing through, since there is nowhere along the running lanes to stop and unload. A job that touches this corridor routes off it into the local roads first, and any address reached via Sidcup Road gets the same treatment: the A20 covers the distance, the final approach happens somewhere quieter.

05

The Progress Estate's Parking-Free Lanes

Laid out just after the First World War, the Progress Estate has winding lanes, cottage frontages and almost no provision for parking, so cars line both sides and the carriageway narrows to a single usable lane through most of it. A Luton simply does not fit down these streets, and turning one around inside the estate is close to impossible once committed. The standard approach is to park on a wider road at the estate's edge and carry the load out on foot or by sack barrow, a few extra minutes that gets factored into the quote rather than discovered on the day.

06

The Climb Towards Shooters Hill

North of the town the land rises steeply, and several of the connecting roads carry a real gradient rather than a gentle slope. Loading a van on that kind of incline changes the approach: the vehicle is positioned facing downhill where possible, the handbrake and wheels are checked before anything heavy goes in, and a sofa or wardrobe travels up the ramp under control rather than being pushed. Crews reposition the van before starting a Shooters Hill job rather than partway through it, since repositioning with a load already aboard is the harder version of the same problem.

07

Avery Hill and the University Side

The roads around Avery Hill Park and the campus are quiet and tree-lined, poorly lit after dark, and several stretches carry no house numbers a satnav will find on its own. Term-time parking pushes cars onto verges and grass edges that soften after rain, which matters for a student move where boxes are carried across grass rather than tarmac for the last few metres. Crews confirm a gate or a park entrance as the reference point before arriving rather than relying on an address alone, and campus barriers or gated service roads add a layer of planning that a residential street simply doesn't need.

08

Middle Park, Horn Park and Coldharbour

The interwar and post-war estates west and south of the centre are built around crescents, closes and garage rows set behind the houses rather than fronting onto them. Those rear lanes are narrow and usually lined with residents' cars that have nowhere else to go, so a van collecting from a rear garage waits on the crescent while the load is carried out along the lane. A cooperative neighbour willing to shift a car for twenty minutes makes the difference between a straightforward job and a difficult one, since the lanes themselves were never built with a removal van in mind.

09

SE9's Semis, Drives and Rear Garages

Most of Eltham is interwar or post-war semi-detached housing, and a good share of it has its own driveway, often sloping down toward the pavement. Rear garages reached along shared lanes are common in the older estates too, and those lanes are frequently gated at one end and blocked at the other by whoever parked there first. The opening question on any SE9 booking is exactly where the load starts: a driveway lets the van pull up close with a straightforward loading run, while a rear lane means confirming access in advance rather than finding out it's blocked on arrival.
