Get across to the hard shoulder and stop with the car right against the verge. The M26 has one for the whole ten miles between Chevening and Wrotham. Use the left-hand doors, put the barrier behind you, then make the call. A roadside change costs from £120 before the tyre.
The M26 is dual two lane throughout with a continuous hard shoulder. No all-lane-running scheme was ever built here, so a genuine refuge exists along the whole link. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.
Stop on the M26 hard shoulder, use the left-hand doors and get everyone past the barrier before phoning. National Highways takes the call on 0300 123 5000. Dial 999 instead if anybody cannot get out. Emergency tyre fitting on the M26 costs from £120, plus the tyre at its cost price.
The M26 does one job. It cuts the corner between the southern M25 and the M20, so Channel-bound traffic coming round the orbital reaches Maidstone and Dover without the long way round. Ten miles, two lanes each way, hard shoulder end to end.
It is also almost featureless. One junction of its own, 2a at Wrotham Heath, numbered to follow the M20's sequence rather than starting again at one. No service area anywhere. The M25 link at junction 5 serves only the western side of the orbital, towards Reigate and Gatwick, and joining westbound at 2a commits you as far as Godstone.
M26 Chevening to Wrotham, 10 miles, M25 J5 to M20 J3, with one junction of its own at J2a, through Kent, between Sevenoaks and Wrotham.
One access point serves the A20 and Borough Green both ways. Acceleration lanes are short for a road carrying loaded artics, so heavy vehicles arrive slower than the traffic already running and everything behind has to move out.
Channel-bound traffic converges here and joins a busier motorway on a downhill approach. Lorries working hard and braking late leave tread scrap in lane one, and a car finding it at seventy loses a sidewall.
When Channel disruption escalates, the Kent plan includes closing the M26 and parking freight on both carriageways. Narrow running, temporary barriers and unfamiliar geometry produce kerbing damage, and a cut sidewall is never repairable.
If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

Callout does not appear as a separate charge; it is built into the figures above. Tyres are supplied at cost, with the amount shown to you before you commit to anything. Night jobs, 23:00 to 07:00, are billed at 1.5x the base rate. That is what leaves 24 hour tyre fitting on the M26 available to overnight Channel freight.
| Service | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile tyre change, supply and fit | From £120 | Covers the visit and the fitting work; the tyre appears separately at cost. West Malling, Borough Green and Maidstone stock most common car and van sizes. |
| Fit the spare you already carry | From £80 | For a usable wheel already in the boot. On a link with one junction and no services, getting moving again is the fastest way out. |
| Puncture repair | From £60 | Possible only when the injury sits in the repairable middle band that British Standard AU159 sets out, with legal depth left. Shoulder damage never qualifies. |
| Locking wheel nut removal | From £70 | Where the key has gone missing or the head has rounded away. Removed without damaging the stud wherever possible, with a fresh nut supplied. |
Hazards on immediately. Ease the power off rather than braking, because a soft tyre drags the car sideways. The M26 has a hard shoulder for its full ten miles.
Park as far left as the ground allows, wheels turned away from the carriageway. Near Wrotham Heath, leaving at junction 2a and stopping on the A20 beats any motorway shoulder.
The driver climbs across too. Nobody opens a door towards traffic. Keep keys and phones with you, and leave pets aboard unless that is the bigger danger.
Then move ahead of the car. Verges along this link are mostly grassed, so there is room to put distance between you and the traffic.
Give your direction and the nearest marker post, since there is only one junction to describe yourself by. An orange SOS phone does that automatically where one is a safe walk. Trapped inside, dial 999 and leave your belt fastened. Book the fitter last. Times quoted are targets, never guarantees.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
Lorries running for Dover and the tunnel from the western M25 use this link constantly. Commercial casings work hard over long hours, and when one delaminates it puts heavy tread into a two-lane carriageway.
The M26 also carries local movement between Sevenoaks, Borough Green and the M20 corridor, plus fully laden cars heading for Gatwick. A car at its load limit on everyday pressures is the classic sudden failure.
Frost damage concentrates on the slip roads at junction 2a and on the approaches at both motorway ends. The injury usually takes the form of a bulge, which puts the tyre beyond saving whatever the tread reads.
Ferry and tunnel departures put more heavily loaded cars onto this link than at any other time, when the road surface is warmest. Heat plus load is what makes a tyre let go suddenly.
The M26 carries no service area. Nearest are Clacket Lane on the M25 between junctions 5 and 6, and Maidstone on the M20 between junctions 8 and 9. Neither is close, which is why junction 2a matters here.
The local trade is decent though. Sevenoaks, Borough Green, West Malling and Maidstone all support fitters, and Kent haulage keeps light commercial fitments in stock nearby. Arrival windows here are targets, not promises.
Depth must clear 1.6mm around the full circumference and across the middle 75 percent of the tread. Camber takes the inner edge down first, so a tyre can pass a glance from the kerb and still be illegal.
Each illegal tyre attracts as much as £2,500 and a three point endorsement, charged separately. Four adds up to a disqualification.
Any bulge, cut or exposed cord means immediate failure and an unroadworthy vehicle, whatever the tread depth. Contraflow kerbing and pothole strikes at the junction slips are the common culprits.
Yes. The M26 keeps a hard shoulder along all ten miles between the M25 and the M20, and TowManVan fitters work there where it is safe. Stand past the barrier while the job is done.
Ring National Highways, 0300 123 5000. Where you can safely walk to an orange SOS phone, that works too. Anyone trapped inside should dial 999. Book a fitter afterwards, saying whether you are nearer the M25 end or Wrotham.
Nothing in law forbids it, though the official advice from National Highways is not to. The M26 is two lanes wide and carries loaded Channel freight, leaving anybody at the offside wheel a short distance from lorries with no third lane to use.
£120 upward for the visit and the fitting, the tyre itself billed at cost and quoted in advance. Using the spare you already carry costs £80 upward; a repair is £60 when the injury allows. Overnight, the rate is one and a half times the base price.
Every part of the M26 has one. There has never been an all-lane-running scheme here, so the strip to your left is a hard shoulder the whole way from Chevening to Wrotham. Stuck in a live lane instead, call 999 and remain where you are.
None sit on the road itself. Clacket Lane is on the M25 between junctions 5 and 6, Maidstone on the M20 between junctions 8 and 9. If the car still moves under its own power, junction 2a onto the A20 is the quicker escape.
Your location comes from GPS, so you do not have to read a marker post. The price is fixed before you confirm and you track the fitter in.
iOS and Android from the 1st of October 2026. No membership, no annual fee and no account charge. You only pay when you book a job.
The fixed price is shown before you confirm, not after the work. Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay are handled in-app, so no cash changes hands at the kerb.
Once a job is accepted you see the driver's name, vehicle and live position on the map, with an arrival time that updates as they travel.
Every operator is DBS checked, insured for hire and reward, and rated after each job. Prices are fixed before dispatch, never quoted as a range.
