The M3 runs as all-lane running between J2 and J4a, covering the Surrey stretch from the M25 interchange toward Farnborough. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call 999. National Highways can close the lane from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before.

The M3 is a comparatively short motorway with two quite different halves. From J1 Sunbury to about J4a it is dense commuter and M25 interchange traffic, converted to all-lane running with no permanent hard shoulder. From Basingstoke south it opens out into fast running toward Winchester and Southampton.
The southern end carries a particular kind of load. Southampton is a major ferry and cruise port, and traffic heading for the docks or the Isle of Wight crossings is heavily laden in the same way M5 holiday traffic is. Cruise passengers with a fortnight of luggage put tyres at the top of their load rating.
Twyford Down, the deep chalk cutting carrying the M3 past Winchester between J9 and J11, is the road's most distinctive feature. The cutting is steep-sided and the gradient means sustained braking southbound, which raises tyre temperature at precisely the point where the road narrows.
The J2 to J4a all-lane running section is the one to be careful about. It carries the M25 interchange load and the Farnborough and Camberley commuter flow, and it is where an M3 tyre failure is most likely to leave you stationary in a live lane rather than on a verge.
Services are limited to Fleet between J4a and J5 and Winchester between J8 and J9. Fleet in particular is one of the busier service areas in the South, and both are realistic targets from most points on the road if the vehicle is still driveable at low speed.
The M3 also has a quirk that catches out drivers used to longer motorways: it ends at a port. Traffic on the southern half is not heading toward a city it can leave and re-enter at will, it is heading toward a sailing or a cruise departure with a fixed cut-off. That produces the same press-on behaviour as an airport run, and the same consequence, which is a repairable puncture turned into a destroyed casing and a bent rim because someone decided the terminal was close enough.
Twyford Down deserves one more mention because of what it does to decision-making rather than to tyres. The cutting is visually enclosed and drivers instinctively want to be out of it before stopping, which is correct. The mistake is continuing past the point where the vehicle is controllable, and on a chalk surface in the wet a deflating front tyre changes the steering much faster than most people expect.

One of the busier stretches with heavy merging at the A31 and A331 junctions. Merging at speed over lane-one debris is a common way to pick up a sidewall cut.
Summer weekends bring loaded family cars, roof boxes and caravans onto the southern M3. Caravan tyres in particular fail from age rather than mileage after a winter parked up.
Fleet and Winchester serve the whole 59 miles. Both are reachable from most points, but a slow deflation noticed south of Winchester has nowhere left before Southampton.
Where the M3 meets the orbital, carrying the densest traffic on the route with short weaving distances. Debris accumulates here in a way it does not further south.
The final run into Southampton, where laden vehicles have been at working temperature for an hour or more. Failures cluster near the end of long journeys, and this is where the M3's end up.
If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

If the tyre goes at speed, do not brake hard. Ease off, hold the wheel straight and let the M3 slow you. South of Basingstoke the M3 opens out and junctions are further apart. Fleet and Winchester are the only services, and both are realistic targets from most points if the car is still moving.
If you cannot reach an exit, get as far onto the verge as the surface allows. Turn the front wheels to the left so any impact pushes the vehicle away from the carriageway rather than into it.
Hazard lights straight away. Everyone leaves through the passenger doors, driver included. Never open a door into a live lane, and leave pets in the car unless it is unsafe to.
Through Twyford Down the cutting sides are steep chalk with nowhere to climb. Move along the verge away from the car rather than trying to get up the slope.
J2 to J4a runs as all-lane running with no hard shoulder. South of there you generally do have one, but the Twyford Down cutting leaves very little room regardless.
Once you are behind the barrier, book in the app. GPS fixes your position on the M3 to within a few metres, so you do not have to read a marker post or guess a junction number in the dark.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
Vehicles heading for the docks or the Isle of Wight crossings run fully laden, often with a fortnight or more of luggage. That puts a family car at the top of its tyre load index on a road where the northern section has no hard shoulder.
The J2 to J5 corridor carries dense daily commuting into and out of London. High annual motorway mileage on the same cambered stretch wears the inner shoulder first, which is the part of the tyre nobody inspects.
The Aldershot, Farnborough and Salisbury Plain area generates specialist and heavy vehicle movements onto the M3. These carry different tyre fitments and shed heavier debris than general traffic when a casing fails.
Ferry and cruise departures concentrate in July and August, bringing the most heavily laden traffic of the year onto the southern half. Load plus high ambient temperature plus sustained speed is the standard blowout recipe.
Wet chalk washed onto the carriageway in the cutting reduces grip, and the gradient means sustained braking on an already slippery surface. Tread below 3mm loses wet performance disproportionately.
Pressure falls 1 to 2 psi per 10 degrees Celsius. On a road where a large share of vehicles are lightly used weekend cars rather than daily commuters, that drop goes unnoticed for longer because nobody is checking.
Maintenance on the J2 to J4a all-lane-running stretch brings narrow lanes and close barriers to a section that already has no hard shoulder. Barrier contact cuts sidewalls, which is never repairable.
Fitter coverage along the M3 is strong. Camberley, Farnborough, Basingstoke, Winchester, Eastleigh and Southampton all sit close to the route, and the Surrey and Hampshire corridor supports good stock depth including the performance fitments common on company cars.
Fleet services between J4a and J5 is one of the busier service areas in the South and a realistic target from most points on the northern half. Winchester services covers the middle. Between Winchester and Southampton there is nothing, which is worth knowing on a dock run.
If you are close to Southampton and the vehicle will move at low speed, the port and terminal car parks are a better working environment than the motorway. Tell the app you are heading there and the fitter will meet you rather than looking for you on the carriageway.
The door pillar carries a second, higher figure for a fully loaded vehicle. Cruise and ferry traffic is exactly the case it exists for, and the difference at the rear axle is often 6 to 8 psi.
Most are limited to 50mph and intended to reach the nearest garage. Using one to complete a run to Southampton and then drive onto a ferry is outside its design, and continental roads may have their own restrictions.
Once driven on while flat, most manufacturers prohibit repairing a run-flat because the reinforced sidewall may be internally damaged in a way inspection cannot detect. Company cars on the M3 commonly run them.
