Covering every junction across M3 - Sunbury, Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton. No surcharge. No membership required.
Beginning at Sunbury Cross and running down through Surrey and Hampshire to the M27 near Southampton, this is one of the main routes from London to the south coast. It crosses the M25 at J2, meets the A303 at Popham and picks up the A34 at Winchester. Cover runs across every junction from J1 to J14, both carriageways, on one unchanging price. The traffic mixes London commuters, west-country holiday runs and freight bound for the docks.
A long section at the northern end operates as a smart motorway with all lanes live, meaning there is no continuous hard shoulder and getting to a refuge is what keeps you safe, an emergency area. The gaps between those areas are wider than most drivers realise until one is needed. If the engine stops between them, staying belted in and calling 999 for a lane closure is the correct move.
At J8 the A303 splits away towards the West Country, and drivers making for Devon or Cornwall commit there with whatever they have. The A303 beyond that point is not generously supplied with fuel, so a marginal tank at Popham becomes a problem later rather than sooner. Anyone who realises before leaving the motorway is better off stopping here and having fuel brought out. Caravans and motorhomes make that turn in numbers every summer weekend, often on a tank that felt ample an hour earlier.
South of Winchester the road runs through the deep cutting at Twyford Down, a distinctive stretch with steep chalk sides and gradients either side of it. Loaded cars, vans and towing outfits feel the climb, and a range figure worked out on the level Hampshire section will not survive it. Crews work both carriageways through the cutting and the junctions bracketing it. The chalk sides funnel wind along the cutting as well, which does nothing at all for a high-sided load.
J9 is where the A34 joins from Newbury and the Midlands, funnelling long-distance traffic and a great deal of freight onto this route for the final run to Southampton. Drivers arriving that way have often been on the road for hours and passed their last convenient stop well back. Interchange links at J9 are covered at the same price as the main carriageways. Box traffic up from the south coast joins in volume here, and those drivers have already covered a great deal of ground.
Weekday traffic pours through the Surrey and north Hampshire junctions towards the business parks at Camberley, Farnborough and Basingstoke, and the queues form on schedule. Sitting still uses fuel while the odometer sits still, so a driver who set off with what looked like enough can arrive at work with rather less. Bookings from those junctions are handled at all hours. School-run traffic layered on top makes September mornings noticeably worse than August ones.
In holiday periods the southbound carriageway fills with loaded cars, roof boxes and towing outfits heading for Southampton, the ferries and the coast. Every one of those raises consumption above the driver's normal experience, and the low-fuel lamp arrives before it is wanted. Fuel travels to the outfit so nothing needs uncoupling, as long as the trailer is logged at booking. A packed estate with four bikes on the back is a very different proposition from the same car empty.
Bear left on whatever momentum survives, hazards showing, and make for the shoulder or whichever emergency area is closest. Leave by the nearside door, place yourself behind the armco and work back along the bank out of reach of the vehicle. On the smart sections there may be no shoulder at all, in which case stay in the car and ring 999 before doing anything else.
A booking at Sunbury costs the same as one at Eastleigh, at any hour and on any day. No membership is required in advance and no call-out fee is applied afterwards. The aim is arrival under the half-hour mark; the charge is agreed before the callout reaches a driver, and the map shows the run in so nobody is left guessing on the verge. Neither the postcode, the hour, nor the length of the run alters what appears on the screen.
Same fixed price across every area. No postcode surcharge.
