M45 - M1 J17 to the A45

Emergency mobile tyre fitting on the M45

Pull onto the hard shoulder, get everyone out on the far side from the traffic and behind the barrier. Eight quiet miles link the M1 to the A45 here, with a full shoulder and no services at all, so help has to come to you. Tyre fitting on the M45 starts at £120.

If you are in a live lane, do not attempt a tyre change

Entirely conventional. Dual two lanes with a hard shoulder throughout, no all-lane running, no gantries, no variable limits. The road is largely as built in 1959, original bridges included. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.

Quick answer

Ease onto the hard shoulder, everyone out on the nearside, then over the barrier and well away from the car. Give National Highways your position on 0300 123 5000, or ring 999 if anyone is trapped. Mobile tyre fitting on the M45 runs from £120 with a tyre supplied.

The M45 is a fragment of an older road plan. Opened in 1959 to carry M1 traffic towards Birmingham, it lost that job when the M6 arrived in 1972 and the M40 was finished in 1991. What remains is eight miles of dual two-lane motorway from the M1 at J17 to the A45 near Thurlaston, still crossed by its original bridges.

Traffic is light by motorway standards, and that changes what a breakdown feels like. There is no service area and nothing within walking distance. The single intermediate junction, J2 near Dunchurch, is limited access, giving an eastbound exit and a westbound entry and nothing more. Lose a tyre in the middle here and everything has to travel to you.

Where M45 tyre failures concentrate

M45 Dunchurch spur, 8 miles, M1 J17 in the east to J1 at the A45 near Thurlaston, with J2 in between, through Warwickshire and Northamptonshire, between Rugby, Dunchurch and Daventry.

The long middle, J2 to the M1

Several miles with no exit and nothing beside the carriageway but farmland. Mud from field entrances, flint thrown up by farm traffic, and nowhere to go make a small puncture a bigger event here.

An old road under modern traffic

This carriageway dates from 1959 and has been patched rather than rebuilt. Older concrete and repaired joints put far more impact through a tyre than fresh asphalt, and the result is sidewall bulging rather than a clean puncture.

The western end at the A45

Where the motorway stops and the A45 takes over towards Coventry and Rugby. Drivers arriving at speed on an unfamiliar layout make late decisions, and nearside wheels find kerbs.

M45 services we cover

If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

M45 tyre prices

No callout is added to these prices, because reaching you is already part of them. The tyre goes through at cost, itemised before you agree. Anything running from 23:00 to 07:00 is multiplied by 1.5 on the base rate. That is what 24 hour tyre fitting on the M45 costs, on a road with little passing help in the dark.

ServicePriceWhat is included
Mobile tyre change, supply and fitFrom £120Plus the tyre at cost. Rugby and Daventry both hold established tyre trade, though here the stock travels to you rather than sitting a mile away.
Fit the spare you already carryFrom £80Where a usable spare is in the car. On a road with nothing on it, this is the quickest route back to moving.
Puncture repairFrom £60Available where the injury sits inside the repairable central portion under BS AU159 and legal depth survives. A casing flattened against the rim cannot be saved.
Locking wheel nut removalFrom £70When the key is lost or the splines have stripped. A non-marking removal is attempted before anything more forceful is considered.

Flat tyre on the M45: what to do

Step 01

Go left onto the shoulder

Do not grab the brakes. Come off the throttle, hold your line and let the car slow itself onto the hard shoulder, present along all eight miles. Get right over and point the front wheels away from the running lanes.

Step 02

Get safe: everybody out on the left

The driver slides across and leaves through the passenger door with the rest. Cross the barrier, then move forward of the car. On a road this empty, what comes past tends to be moving quickly.

Step 03

Get help before you get comfortable

There may be no orange SOS phone within a sensible walk, so a mobile is normally what you use. Call National Highways instead on 0300 123 5000. Ring 999 first if anybody is stuck inside, or the car ended up in a running lane.

Step 04

What changes at either end

Nothing here has overhead signals. Join the M1 and you are in gantry country, where a red X shown over a lane closes it to everything. The M1 also has converted sections without a shoulder, where emergency areas carry blue boards showing an orange handset.

The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.

What drives the M45, and what fails

Freight cutting across to Coventry

The M45 and A45 together still work as a link between the M1 and Coventry, so a share of the traffic is articulated and heavily laden. Lorry tyres delaminate when a casing runs hot, and on a road this quiet the debris lies undisturbed a long while.

Local cars and farm vehicles

The rest is Rugby, Dunchurch and Daventry traffic on short local trips. Cars used mostly on rural lanes collect cuts from flint and hedge trimmings, which only fail once the tyre is loaded at motorway speed.

M45 tyre failures through the year

Winter, frost on an old surface

Freeze and thaw open up patched joints on a carriageway repaired many times over. Impact damage in these months shows as a bulge in the sidewall, which means replacement whatever depth remains.

Late summer, harvest debris

Field work either side puts mud, stone and straw onto the connecting roads, and some reaches the motorway on tyres and trailers. Stones are what cut tread blocks open.

Getting a tyre near the M45

Nothing sits on the M45 itself. Watford Gap on the M1 between J16 and J17 is the closest services and barely off the eastern end, so it is the obvious destination if the car still moves. Rugby services on the M6 at J1 is the other option.

Rugby, Dunchurch and Daventry all have tyre trade, so parts are not the problem here. Distance is. Arrival times are targets, never undertakings, and on a road with two usable junctions it pays to give your direction of travel when you book.

Tread, pressure and the law

Where the legal depth is measured

Tread is judged over the central portion only, three quarters of the width, and it must hold at every point round the tyre. Makers set raised bars into the groove bases at 1.6mm, and tread worn down to them is out of legal life.

Penalties, and the MOT

Three points and as much as £2,500 attach to each tyre individually, so a full set is a disqualification rather than a fine. Sidewall damage is separate: a swelling, split or exposed cord fails an MOT on the spot, whatever depth the gauge shows.

M45 tyre questions

Do you work on the hard shoulder of the M45?

Yes. The M45 is conventional over all eight miles and has a hard shoulder throughout, so a tyre can be changed at the roadside wherever the spot allows. There is no converted section here and no emergency areas.

Who do I ring after a blowout on the M45?

Use 999 straight away if anyone is trapped or the car ended up in a running lane. Otherwise National Highways take the report on 0300 123 5000. An orange SOS phone may not be within a sensible walk here.

Is roadside wheel changing on a motorway illegal?

No law forbids it, but National Highways recommend against it and the M45 gives a reason to listen. Traffic here is sparse and therefore fast, and a driver not expecting a stationary car is the one who hits it.

What is the price for emergency tyre fitting on the M45?

£120 covers the tyre and the fitting, £80 covers a spare you are already carrying, and a repair is £60 when the damage allows. There is no separate callout, and overnight the rate goes up by half.

What if I cannot reach the M45 hard shoulder?

That is rare here, since the shoulder is continuous. If the car ends up in a traffic lane, treat it as an emergency: hazards on, everybody out to the nearside and behind the barrier, and 999 rather than anything else.

How far is the nearest help on the M45?

Nothing at all: not a service area, not a filling station, not even a decent lay-by. Watford Gap sits on the M1 between J16 and J17, just past the eastern end, and Rugby services on the M6 is the other within reach. Remember that J2 allows only an eastbound exit and a westbound entry.

Mobile tyre fitters wanted on the M45

This is a quiet stretch of Warwickshire motorway with nothing on it, which is exactly why fitters covering Rugby, Dunchurch and Daventry are worth listing against it. Fitters keep 90 percent of every job for their first twelve months, with no joining fee, no weekly subscription, no bidding and no charge for jobs you decline. You set your own radius and hours. We are signing up fitters along the M45 ahead of the 1st of October 2026 launch.
