Eight miles of two lane motorway between the M1 at J17 and the A45 west of Dunchurch, the M45 exists to feed Rugby and the Coventry direction off the southern M1. Traffic that once used it to reach Birmingham now takes the M6, so it carries far less than its width suggests. Short does not mean safe to gamble on, because there is nothing along it if the tank empties.
This spur opened alongside the very first stretch of the M1 and was built to the standards of that era: two lanes each way, a continuous hard shoulder, no gantries and no variable signs. The full width shoulder is a genuine advantage if you stop, because there is somewhere to put the car. What it lacks is the roadside infrastructure drivers now expect to find every twenty miles or so.
There is no service area on the M45 and no forecourt reachable from it without leaving at one end or the other. A driver joining from the M1 with the warning light already on has committed to reaching the A45, and a driver joining from the A45 has committed to reaching the M1 network. Neither is far, but neither is possible on an empty tank. That is the whole risk profile of this road.
J17 is where this spur leaves the M1, and it is also where it loses access to everything the M1 corridor offers. Drivers pulling off late in a long run north often make the turn without thinking about range, because the sign says Coventry feels close. If the gauge is low at J17, the sensible move is staying on the M1 as far as the next stop.
J1 puts traffic onto the A45 for Rugby and the local network, and it is the only intermediate junction on the road. Calls from here often come from drivers who were nearly at a filling station and did not quite make it, or who pulled onto the slip and lost the engine on the ramp. Slip roads count as covered ground: say which way you were pointing and the operator will come to the ramp.
At the far end the motorway simply stops and the carriageway becomes the A45 towards Coventry. The transition is easy to miss after dark. It matters for a breakdown because the classification of the road changes, and the rules about where you may stop change with it. If you are unsure which side of the changeover you are on, describe the last sign you passed and the operator will work it out.
Volumes here are low compared with the M1 it leaves, which sounds reassuring and is not. Fewer vehicles means fewer people to notice a stopped car, longer gaps before anyone reports it, and higher approach speeds because the road looks empty. Stand behind the barrier rather than beside the vehicle, and keep the hazard lights running for the whole wait instead of switching them off to save the battery.
There is very little to describe on this spur: no gantries to quote, few structures and long identical stretches of verge. The most useful thing you can give the app is the marker post number on the small blue plate at the roadside, the direction you were pointing, and whether you had passed J1 yet. That combination places a vehicle on an eight mile road within a few hundred metres.
This road goes very quiet after dark and there is no lighting along most of it, so an overnight stop is genuinely isolated. Bookings are taken at any time with no night premium, no weekend rate and no bank holiday loading. The aim is to have someone with you inside half an hour. The operator turns up in high visibility clothing with compliant warning lighting, and puts that out before going near the stopped vehicle.
