Get the car onto the hard shoulder and put the hazards on before anything else. This page covers where tyres fail on the Liverpool outer ring, what a roadside fit costs, and what to do while you wait for a fitter on the M57.
The whole ring is built to conventional motorway standard, so a hard shoulder runs continuously from J1 to J7. No part of the M57 has been converted to all-lane running. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.
Steer for the hard shoulder, put the hazards on and get behind the barrier. If the car will not move, ring National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you are trapped in a live lane. Mobile tyre fitting on the M57 starts at £120 supplied and fitted, 24/7 from J1 to J7.
The M57 is a ten-mile loop carrying traffic around the eastern edge of Liverpool, linking the M62 at Tarbock to the M58 and the Southport road at Switch Island. It is short enough to drive end to end in fifteen minutes, yet it carries a lot of heavy traffic for its length: port containers and tankers moving between the M62 and the docks, plus shift traffic from the Knowsley estates that line the middle stretch.
Because it is a ring rather than a through-route, most drivers here are local. Failures tend to come from worn tyres on short, repeated journeys rather than sudden blowouts on a long haul, and from the older roundabout-style junctions at either end, where kerbing is more of a factor than on a modern free-flow interchange.
M57 Liverpool Outer Ring Road, 10 miles, J1 Tarbock to J7 Switch Island, through Merseyside, looping east of Liverpool through Knowsley and Kirkby.
Where the ring meets the M62 and becomes the A5300 southbound. Traffic merging in from a motorway meets tight geometry here, and lane-one debris carried off the M62 is a regular cause of punctures right at the join.
Estates either side of the ring run shifts around the clock, and this stretch carries a steady flow of vans and HGVs. Shed tread from a heavy vehicle in lane one is a common cause of a sudden flat here.
A dense interchange where the M57 meets the M58, the A59 and several other routes at the ring's northern tip. Short merges and heavy weaving make this the most congested point on the road, and late lane changes here are a frequent cause of tyre damage.
If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.
| Service area | Between |

Callout and labour sit at those fixed figures, with no separate charge added just for turning out. The tyre supplied goes on screen at cost before you say yes to anything. That holds true for 24 hour tyre fitting on the M57: only the clock changes what you pay, since a 1.5x multiplier applies to jobs booked between 23:00 and 07:00.
| Service | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile tyre change, supply and fit | From £120 | Plus the tyre, shown at cost before you confirm. Common car sizes are carried, and the M57's junctions all sit close to Merseyside's usual tyre stockists for anything less common. |
| Fit the spare you already carry | From £80 | The quickest way off a ten-mile ring with a junction never more than a couple of miles away. |
| Puncture repair | From £60 | Assessed on the spot against British Standard AU159; a clean puncture in the central tread with healthy depth either side usually qualifies. |
| Locking wheel nut removal | From £70 | Covers a missing or worn-out key, using a non-destructive extraction method wherever the nut allows it. |
A sudden loss of pressure pulls at the wheel; resist the urge to brake and let the car roll down to a stop on the hard shoulder instead. Junctions on the M57 are close together, so there is usually one within a mile or two if the car is still steering true.
Put the hazards on the moment you stop. Everyone leaves through the doors away from traffic, driver included, and then over the barrier to stand well back and ahead of the vehicle.
From the hard shoulder, National Highways can be reached on 0300 123 5000 to log your position, or use one of the orange SOS phones on the verge. If the car has stopped in a live lane and you cannot get out safely, call 999 instead.
Safe behind the barrier, open the app and book. It reads your position on the M57 from GPS, so there is nothing to describe and no marker post to search for in the dark.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
Containers and tankers running between the Port of Liverpool and the M62 use the full ring, and heavy vehicles shed far more debris than cars. Shredded HGV tread in lane one is one of the more common causes of a car puncture here.
Most journeys on the M57 are short and local rather than long-distance. Tyres on repeated short runs rarely warm through properly, which can mask a slow puncture until it fails outright.
Merseyside's wet winters open up surface defects at the older junctions, and a pothole strike produces a sidewall bulge rather than a simple puncture. A bulge is never repairable, whatever the tread depth.
Warm weather raises the temperature of tyres already close to the legal limit, and a marginal tyre that survives a cool winter commute can fail on the same short run in July.
There is no motorway service area anywhere on the M57. It is a ring road passed through rather than stopped on, so a mobile fitter working the hard shoulder or a junction slip road is the practical option here.
When the car can still be driven a short way at low speed, the retail parks and industrial estates around J2 to J5 in Knowsley and Kirkby sit close to the road and give a fitter somewhere lit and off the carriageway to work.
The legal minimum tread depth applies across the central three quarters of the tyre's width and all the way round. A tyre can look fine on the shoulder and still be illegal in the centre.
The penalty for illegal tread applies to each tyre separately, not to the car as a whole.
A cut, bulge or exposed cord is an automatic failure regardless of tread depth, and kerbing at the M57's older junctions is a common cause of exactly this.
Yes. The M57 has a hard shoulder for its entire length with no all-lane running, and TowManVan fitters work there where it is safe to do so. Get behind the barrier while you wait rather than standing next to the car.
Call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 once you are safely behind the barrier, or 999 if the vehicle is stuck in a live lane and you cannot get out. Book the tyre fitter separately once you are safe.
It is not against the law, but National Highways advises against doing it yourself on the hard shoulder because it puts you on the traffic side of the vehicle at speed. On the M57, get behind the barrier and let a fitter take the risk instead.
Supplying and fitting a replacement tyre is £120 upward, swapping on the spare from your boot is £80 upward, and a repairable puncture runs from £60. Book between 23:00 and 07:00 and a 1.5x multiplier applies, always shown before you confirm.
The M57 has a hard shoulder along its whole length, so this should not come up. If you have broken down at one of the older roundabout junctions at J1, J2 or J7 instead, say so when you book so the fitter knows what they are walking into.
Your location comes from GPS, so you do not have to read a marker post. The price is fixed before you confirm and you track the fitter in.
iOS and Android from the 1st of October 2026. No membership, no annual fee and no account charge. You only pay when you book a job.
The fixed price is shown before you confirm, not after the work. Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay are handled in-app, so no cash changes hands at the kerb.
Once a job is accepted you see the driver's name, vehicle and live position on the map, with an arrival time that updates as they travel.
Every operator is DBS checked, insured for hire and reward, and rated after each job. Prices are fixed before dispatch, never quoted as a range.

Take jobs through the same appPort freight through J1 and shift traffic around the Knowsley estates keep the M57 busy at hours a lot of other roads go quiet, which is the kind of corridor this app is built around. Fitters keep 90 percent of every job for their first twelve months, with no joining fee, no weekly subscription, no bidding and no charge for jobs you decline. You set your own radius and hours. We are signing up fitters along the M57 ahead of the 1st of October 2026 launch.
