M606 - Chain Bar to Bradford

Emergency mobile tyre fitting on the M606

Put the car onto the M606 hard shoulder and get every passenger out on the nearside, behind the barrier, before you make any call. Three miles is the whole road, Chain Bar to the Bradford ring road, and nothing along it sells fuel or coffee. Fitting starts at £120, tyre included.

If you are in a live lane, do not attempt a tyre change

In no sense a smart motorway. Nothing overhead controls the lanes, no refuges are marked, and the carriageway is as it was built in 1973. A high-occupancy vehicle lane ran here from 2007 until 2017 and nothing took its place. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.

Quick answer

Pull onto the hard shoulder, hazards on, and empty the car on the passenger side with everyone standing behind the barrier. A trapped occupant means 999. Otherwise the National Highways motorway line is 0300 123 5000. M606 tyre fitting opens from £120 with the tyre in that figure.

Named on paper as the Bradford South Radial Motorway, the M606 opened in 1973 to do one job: take traffic off the M62 at Chain Bar and set it down at the southern edge of Bradford. Three miles, three junctions, and a northern end rebuilt in 2004 where the A6036 and the ring road take over.

Junction 2 carries a quirk worth knowing before a tyre lets go. No northbound entrance exists there, so a driver heading for Bradford cannot rejoin after leaving. Come off at J2 on a damaged tyre and you are on surface streets until J3, which changes the sums on whether to keep rolling.

Where M606 tyre failures concentrate

M606 Bradford spur, 3 miles, J1 at M62 junction 26, Chain Bar, up to J3 on the ring road, through West Yorkshire, from Chain Bar into south Bradford.

J1 and the Chain Bar interchange

The M62 hands over at a busy roundabout system with tight kerbed geometry. A rim clipped on the circulatory carriageway leaves an injury that surfaces once the car is up to speed.

The Euroway industrial area beside J2

Trade and construction vehicles working the estates here scatter screws, nails and offcuts across the approaches and drag them onto the carriageway. Sharp-object punctures run well above rural rates.

The northern end into the ring road

Motorway speed drops to urban speed across a very short distance. Repeated heavy braking on a worn front tyre is when a tired casing gives up.

M606 services we cover

If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

M606 tyre prices

No callout charge sits above the figures here, since bringing a fitter into Bradford is already inside them. The tyre changes hands at cost and is shown to you in full ahead of confirmation. After 23:00, and until 07:00, a 1.5 multiplier lands on the base rate, which is what 24 hour tyre fitting on the M606 actually costs once it is dark.

ServicePriceWhat is included
Mobile tyre change, supply and fitFrom £120Tyre charged at cost. Bradford's independent trade is dense, so ordinary fitments sit nearby rather than on an order sheet.
Fit the spare you already carryFrom £80If a usable spare is already aboard. Across three miles that is frequently all it takes to get clear and arrange a proper fix.
Puncture repairFrom £60Possible when the hole lands in the repairable middle region that BS AU159 sets out, with tread still over the limit.
Locking wheel nut removalFrom £70Where the key has vanished or its splines have given up. A method that spares the wheel comes first, then correct torque on refit.

Flat tyre on the M606: what to do

Step 01

Go left, and keep the shortness of this road in mind

Ease off instead of braking and take the shoulder. Three miles means an exit is always near, but J2 offers no northbound entrance, so leaving northbound commits you to the surface network.

Step 02

Get safe: passenger side, everyone including the driver

Hazards first, then out through the nearside doors. Nobody stands between the car and the traffic, and nobody sits inside waiting. Get past the barrier and move forward of the vehicle.

Step 03

Get help: an SOS phone, or the 0300 123 5000 line

A free orange phone on the shoulder connects to the regional control room with your location already logged. Where that is not reachable, National Highways answer on 0300 123 5000, and 999 comes first for anyone stuck in the car.

Step 04

Book the fitter, then mind the M62 rules

Book from behind the barrier. Your position comes from GPS, and the window given is a target arrival rather than a promise. Rejoin the M62 and things may differ: on converted stretches the only proper refuge is an emergency area, placed at intervals and signposted in blue with an orange telephone motif. A lane under a red X is shut.

The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.

What drives the M606, and what fails

Bradford commuting and multi-drop vans

A city access route first and a motorway second, so short local journeys and delivery work dominate. Tyres on that pattern rarely warm through, letting a slow leak hide for weeks.

M62 traffic diving into the city

The rest is longer-distance traffic peeling off at Chain Bar, arriving hot and meeting urban braking inside a mile. That temperature swing finds whatever weakness the casing was already carrying.

M606 tyre failures through the year

Winter into early spring

West Yorkshire frost prises open slip road joints and the Chain Bar approaches. What you collect is a bulge or a buckled rim, and neither can be patched.

All year, with no quiet season

Unlike a holiday route this road never eases off. Commuters and deliveries fill it every weekday, so roadworks always land on top of live demand rather than instead of it.

Getting a tyre near the M606

The M606 holds no services of any kind. Hartshead Moor, on the M62 between J25 and J26, is the closest motorway stop and means rejoining westbound at Chain Bar. Should the car still creep, the trade sites off the ring road at the northern end are far nearer and far better.

Bradford supports a large independent tyre trade, useful for stock but not at the roadside, since none of those units attends a live motorway. Times shown are targets, based on the accepting operator's real position.

Tread, pressure and the law

The 1.6mm rule, read carefully

Legally the tread must keep 1.6mm across its central three quarters, checked all the way round rather than at one spot. Raised indicators inside the main grooves mark that height, so a tread flush with them has arrived at the limit.

Fines by the tyre, and instant failures

That penalty of up to £2,500 with three points attaches to each tyre individually, so a car on four bald ones faces a ban. Any split, bulge or exposed cord ends an MOT immediately, and Chain Bar kerbing supplies exactly that.

M606 tyre questions

Can a wheel be changed on the M606 hard shoulder?

Yes. This is a conventional motorway rather than a converted one, so a shoulder exists along all three miles and roadside fitting works wherever the spot is sound.

Who should I phone about a flat tyre on the M606?

999 comes first when a person is trapped or the vehicle has stopped in a running lane. Failing that, an SOS phone on the shoulder, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000.

Is changing a tyre on a motorway against the law?

It is no offence, though it is not sensible either. Even on three miles of urban motorway you would be crouched on the offside with M62 traffic building speed past you, and there is no generous verge to retreat onto.

How much is emergency tyre fitting on the M606?

£120 upward for supply and fit, £80 upward to put your own spare on, £60 for a repair the damage permits, and £70 for a locking nut. Turning out is not billed separately, and after 23:00, until 07:00, a 1.5 multiplier lands on the base rate.

Does any part of the M606 lack a hard shoulder?

No part of it. The road was never converted, so no emergency areas exist and nothing overhead governs its lanes. That changes only back on the M62.

My car has no spare wheel at all, what happens then?

That is normal now, since most new cars ship with a sealant canister. Sealant will not touch a sidewall cut or anything beyond a small tread hole, so a fitter carrying the actual tyre is usually the only answer.

Mobile tyre fitters wanted on the M606

Three miles pouring M62 traffic into Bradford leaves no margin and offers no stopping place. Whoever covers it should know Chain Bar, Low Moor and the ring road end as streets, not coordinates. Fitters keep 90 percent of every job for their first twelve months, with no joining fee, no weekly subscription, no bidding and no charge for jobs you decline. You set your own radius and hours. We are signing up fitters along the M606 ahead of the 1st of October 2026 launch.
