M66 - Simister Island to Edenfield

Emergency mobile tyre fitting on the M66

Take the M66 hard shoulder and empty the vehicle by its passenger doors, then get the whole group up behind the barrier. Eight miles run from Simister Island to Edenfield without a single service area, so a fitter drives out to the car, from £120 including the tyre.

If you are in a live lane, do not attempt a tyre change

Wholly ordinary. Nothing here runs as all-lane running, no refuges are marked out and no signals hang above the lanes, and the shoulder is unbroken end to end. Built in the late 1970s, this road once ran far further south before that part was absorbed into the M60 orbital. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.

Quick answer

Use the hard shoulder, set the hazards going, and get everyone clear through the nearside doors to a position behind the barrier. Somebody unable to get out means 999. For everything else, National Highways answer on 0300 123 5000. M66 tyre fitting opens at £120, tyre in the price.

Eight miles take the M66 from Simister Island, where the M60 and M62 meet north of Manchester, up the Irwell valley past Bury to Edenfield, where the road turns into the A56 for Rawtenstall and the Rossendale valley. Its old southern half was absorbed into the M60 orbital, which is why the junctions now count from the north.

It behaves like two roads spliced together. Below Bury it is a Greater Manchester commuter and distribution route, dense and busy. Above the town it climbs into open Pennine country, colder and wetter than the city, and that gradient and exposure is what sets M66 tyre failures apart.

Where M66 tyre failures concentrate

M66 Bury to Edenfield, 8 miles, J4 Simister Island north to the A56 at Edenfield, via J3, J2 and J1, through Greater Manchester and Lancashire, up the Irwell valley past Bury.

J4 and the approach to Simister Island

Three motorways come together and the room to weave is thin. Committing late across a loaded nearside lane is the standard way to collect whatever lies there, and queues reach back onto the M66 often.

The climb north of Bury towards Edenfield

Sustained gradient with far more exposure than the southern half. Rubber runs hot up a long pull and cools fast in the wind at the top, and that cycle finds a weak casing.

J1 at Walmersley and its missing movements

No southbound exit and no northbound entrance exist here, so drivers regularly take the wrong slip and correct late. Kerbed rims and creased sidewalls from that manoeuvre surface further along.

M66 services we cover

If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

M66 tyre prices

No callout line appears anywhere on your bill, because the journey out is already covered. Tyres are charged at cost and laid out on screen for you to look at before confirming. From 23:00 until 07:00 the base figure is multiplied by 1.5, the published night rate for 24 hour tyre fitting on the M66.

ServicePriceWhat is included
Mobile tyre change, supply and fitFrom £120Tyre added at cost. Between them Bury, Rochdale and north Manchester stock most mainstream car and van sizes locally.
Fit the spare you already carryFrom £80Where a usable spare rides with you. Bear in mind a space saver on the pull towards Edenfield leaves you well under the surrounding pace.
Puncture repairFrom £60Only if the damage lands in the repairable central area BS AU159 describes, with legal tread remaining. Nothing near the shoulder counts.
Locking wheel nut removalFrom £70When the key has been lost or worn smooth. Wherever the design permits, the nut comes away without marking the wheel face.

Flat tyre on the M66: what to do

Step 01

Go left, right onto the shoulder

Ease off rather than braking, hold a straight line, and take the shoulder that runs the full length of this road. Both nearside wheels off the running surface, and the front wheels turned away from traffic.

Step 02

Get safe: passenger doors, nobody stays put

Hazards on, then everybody out on the nearside, driver climbing across too. North of Bury the wind comes off open ground and will pull a door. Wait behind the barrier, forward of the car.

Step 03

Get help: an orange SOS phone if one is within reach

Free orange phones along the shoulder reach the control room and show where you are without any description. Where none is reachable, National Highways take the call on 0300 123 5000, and anyone trapped means 999 first.

Step 04

Book the fitter, then watch for the M60 rules

Book from behind the barrier; GPS supplies your location, and whatever time comes back is a target arrival rather than a guarantee. Join the M60 or M62 and the shoulder may vanish. There the refuge is an emergency area, positioned at intervals and picked out by a blue sign with an orange handset symbol, while a red X overhead shuts the lane below.

The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.

What drives the M66, and what fails

Rossendale valley commuting

Much of the traffic is daily mileage between the Rossendale towns and Manchester, up and down the same gradient twice over. Load changes on a climb consume tyres faster than level running.

Distribution vehicles out of Bury and Heywood

Loaded vans and rigids join at J2 and J3 heading for the M60 and M62. Those tyres work to a C rating at raised pressures, and the right number comes off the vehicle plate.

M66 tyre failures through the year

Winter at the Edenfield end

The upper miles sit higher than the city and hold ice, surface water and crosswind when Manchester has none. Cold nights also strip several psi out of a tyre, enough to expose a tired one.

Late winter surface damage

Frost opens joints on the Bury slip roads, and an impact at speed leaves a bulged sidewall or a bent rim instead of a tidy puncture. Neither can be put right.

Getting a tyre near the M66

No service area exists on the M66. Birch, on the M62 between J18 and J19, is the closest and means carrying on through Simister Island. Where the car will still roll gently, the trade sites around Bury and the A56 at Edenfield are nearer.

Bury, Heywood, Rawtenstall and north Manchester all support independent fitters: good for stock, no use at the roadside, since not one attends a live motorway. Whatever window you are quoted is a target, taken from the accepting operator's position.

Tread, pressure and the law

What 1.6mm actually covers

1.6mm is the legal floor, covering the tread's central three quarters and holding at every point around the tyre. Small moulded bars in the main grooves mark that height, so tread level with them is at the limit rather than nearing it.

Penalties by the tyre, and instant failures

The maximum of £2,500 plus three points applies to each illegal tyre on its own, taking a full set past a fine and into a ban. Sidewall damage stands separately: a bulge, cut or exposed cord ends the MOT whatever the gauge shows.

M66 tyre questions

Is roadside tyre fitting possible on the M66 hard shoulder?

Yes. An unbroken shoulder runs all eight miles, so work is done at the roadside wherever the position allows, with the vehicle pulled fully off the running surface.

What do I dial for a flat tyre on the M66?

Anybody trapped inside, or a car stopped in traffic, means 999 without hesitating. Otherwise an orange SOS phone puts you through to the control room, and the National Highways line is 0300 123 5000.

Can you legally change a tyre on a motorway?

There is no law against it, but it is a bad trade. Here you would be crouched on the traffic side with M60-bound freight going past, and above Bury in a Pennine crosswind it is worse.

How much will emergency tyre fitting on the M66 cost?

A supplied and fitted tyre opens at £120, your own spare at £80, a locking nut at £70, and £60 for a repair the damage permits. Attendance is never billed on top, and after 23:00 the base figure is multiplied by 1.5.

Are there sections of the M66 with no hard shoulder?

Not one. Conversion never reached this motorway, so it carries neither emergency areas nor red X gantries. All of that begins once you join the M60 or M62.

Do I really have to get out of the car?

Yes, and so does everyone with you. A car parked on a shoulder is a target for anything drifting left, and sitting inside is the worst option available. Leave by the nearside and get past the barrier.
