Northolt Road runs the spine of South Harrow, a busy shopping street with bus stops, loading bays and side turnings that fill early. Traffic backs up towards the station at peak in both directions. A car that dies in a bay there is in everybody's way, so the priority is to lift and clear rather than stand about diagnosing. Where the parade is solid, loading happens from the quieter side street behind it.
Rayners Lane sits where two lines meet and it draws parking from a wide area, spilling into the residential roads either side of the station. Bays turn over quickly, restrictions vary street by street, and unrestricted stretches fill before eight. Cars stand for days here and come back with nothing left in the battery. Access for a bed is fine on the main road and tight the moment you turn off it.
Alexandra Avenue runs a long straight line through the middle of HA2 with parades, side turnings and a steady flow of buses. It moves well between peaks and badly during them. The verges and bays are shallow, so a stopped car sits closer to the running lane than the driver expects. Operators bring the truck in behind the casualty, beacons on, and load from the pavement side only.
North Harrow gathers around the station and the Pinner Road parade, with a mix of shops, flats above and residential streets running off at right angles. Parking is controlled near the station and free further out, which pushes the pressure outward. A flatbed can work on Pinner Road with cones down, but the side roads are narrower than they look once both kerbs are lined with cars.
Towards Headstone Lane the postcode gets greener and lower. Headstone Manor sits in open parkland, and the ground around it drains slowly after heavy rain, so verges soften and dips hold water. Driving into standing water is the mistake to avoid here, because a wet engine is a workshop job rather than a roadside one. If the car has been through water, it gets lifted, not restarted.
South Harrow bus garage puts a constant flow of buses onto the surrounding roads, and the link towards the A312 carries heavier traffic than the street width suggests. Turning space is limited and blocking a bus route causes trouble within a minute. The operator will position on the approach side and get the casualty away quickly rather than working in a spot that stops a service running.
Most of HA2 is metroland semis with short drives, a fair number of them shortened further by an extension or a converted garage. Dropped kerbs are narrow and the gate posts are close. Getting a car off a drive like that is a controlled pull to the road rather than a straight lift where it stands, and the ramp comes down on the carriageway where there is finally room.
The Yeading Brook and the low ground it runs through cut across the western side of this area, and the roads that cross it sit lower than their neighbours. After sustained rain those dips hold water deep enough to matter. A car that has stalled in one should stay switched off, because restarting a flooded engine is what turns a bad afternoon into a new engine bill.
A lot of the older housing here keeps its garages in rear courts reached by narrow alleys between the houses. Those alleys were sized for a 1930s saloon, not for a modern car and certainly not for a truck. A vehicle stuck in a rear court has to be brought out to the street before any lift can happen, usually on skates and usually slowly.
