Portsmouth is an island city with three ways on and off it, some of the most tightly packed terraced streets in the country and a seafront that takes the weather head on. TowManVan works every part of it, from Old Portsmouth and Southsea out through Cosham to Waterlooville and Havant, on a figure agreed in the app first.
Portsmouth coverage through the TowManVan app begins with PO1 through Old Portsmouth, Landport and Gunwharf, PO2 to PO5 at Hilsea, Copnor, Milton and Southsea, PO6 across Cosham, Paulsgrove and Port Solent, plus PO7 Waterlooville and PO9 Havant. Seven set prices, £49 upwards. Thirty minutes is the arrival operators aim at.

Fixed upfront prices. No membership fees. Live operator tracking across every postcode in Portsmouth.
Nothing left after a fortnight in ferry long stay, or on a Southsea permit street. An operator jumps it and meters the battery, so the trip home is not another gamble.
Tyre gone on the motorway spur, or a kerbed rim on a Milton side street. Your spare is fitted right where you stopped, repairable damage sorted, pressures put back right.
Keys shut in at Gunwharf, or outside a Copnor terrace. No drill near the barrel, no forced glass, no marked paint. At any hour of the day or night.
Tank empty on the eastern shore road, or petrol where diesel belonged on the A27. The right fuel is carried to your exact position, misfuelled tanks emptied and rinsed.
Cut-out on the spur, or a warning light climbing Portsdown Hill. Codes are read, whatever is fixable gets fixed where you sit, and lifts what is not.
Almost everything in this city sits on an island joined to the mainland at a small number of points, so traffic funnels through the same few crossings whatever the time of day. An incident on one pushes everything onto the others within minutes. For recovery that means the route in is decided by which crossing is flowing rather than which looks shortest, and the direction you were heading matters a great deal.
The spur runs straight into the heart of the city from the motorway, elevated in places and with very limited room to stand safely. It carries port traffic, commuters and holiday coaches on the same short stretch, so a stopped vehicle there is an obstruction almost immediately. Operators look to get a casualty car off the spur before doing anything else rather than working in a live lane.
The residential grid across the island is late Victorian terracing at very high density, with no driveways, no rear access worth the name and permit bays filling both kerbs. Working width drops to a single vehicle on most of it. Loading happens on a junction or a broader stretch nearby, with the car skated across, and that is simply how recovery works throughout these postcodes.
The road along the eastern edge runs close to the water with marsh and harbour on one side, and it takes spray and standing water when a high tide meets a strong southerly. Salt water and electrics are a bad combination, so a car caught out there is loaded rather than restarted. Getting in on those days depends on what is actually passable rather than what the map shows.
The waterfront combines retail parking, historic dockyard land and a working ferry port, each with its own gates, barriers and access rules. Recovery inside a secure area rests with the site rather than with us, so a job frequently begins at the gate. Retail decks nearby are barriered below the clearance a loaded flatbed needs, which keeps the truck out at street level while the car is brought to it on skates.
The southern shore is open to the Solent with a shingle beach and a long promenade road that catches wind, spray and blown stones in bad weather. Shingle on the surface gives poor grip, so an operator positions to pull in line instead of hauling a car over a loose layer. Salt-laden air out here is hard on brake components and seizes cables faster than inland.
The chalk ridge behind the city rises sharply, and the roads climbing it are steep with limited places to pull in and long views that tempt people to stop where they should not. A flatbed bed cannot be lowered level on that gradient, so loading is done at the top or the bottom. Wind on the exposed ridge is noticeably stronger than down in the streets below.
Just off the island the pattern shifts to postwar estate housing running up the slope, a busy shopping street and a large hospital site with barriered parking. Estate roads here are wide enough to work on, which helps, but the gradient and the shift changes at the hospital shape the timing. Cars that have stood all day in an open bay are the usual winter callouts.
North and east of the ridge the area opens into newer estate housing, retail parks and the motorway link running up towards the Downs. Closes here have narrow turning heads and shared driveways, so a loading spot out on the through road is normally the sensible option. The A27 and the motorway link carry the through traffic and each gives reasonable room to work from, unlike almost anything back down on the island itself.
