We won't pretend TowManVan will always beat a local driver haggling in cash on the roadside, sometimes it won't. What it does offer is a fixed price you see before a truck is even dispatched, roughly half the cost of a non-member AA or RAC callout, and no annual membership fee to pay for cover you might not use.
Sometimes, no, and it's worth being upfront about that. A random local operator who answers the phone and agrees a cash price there and then can, on a good day, undercut any fixed-price platform, because he isn't disclosing a rate card, he's just naming a number. What TowManVan trades that possibility for is certainty: the price you see in the app before you confirm is the price you pay, whoever turns up and whatever the traffic is doing.

Fixed pricing is a genuine trade-off: you give up the small chance of talking someone down, in exchange for never being talked up once your car is already on the truck.
The honest way to judge "cheap" is over a full year, not one callout. Here's what each option actually costs once the annual fee, if there is one, is added back in.
| Option | What you pay | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| AA/RAC annual membership | Roughly £150-£200+ a year, every year | Charged whether or not you ever break down, and some tiers still add fees for a full recovery rather than a roadside fix |
| AA/RAC callout, no membership | Commonly £150-£250 for a single job | A one-off price, but usually double or more what TowManVan charges for the same tow |
| TowManVan, pay only when needed | £70-£120 fixed, per job | Nothing to pay in the months you don't break down, and no joining fee to get started |
If you break down two or three times a year, membership can work out ahead. If it's rare, once every few years, paying only when it happens is usually the cheaper path, and it's the one with no annual bill either way.
The fixed price can't be haggled, but it isn't fixed regardless of the situation either. Three things are genuinely within your control.
One thing that won't affect a recovery booking either way: the day of the week. Unlike man-and-van or removals jobs, there's no weekend surcharge on car recovery.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Car under 1300kg | £70 |
| Car 1300-1600kg | £75 |
| Car over 1600kg | £85 |
| Van or minibus | £120 |
| Skates fee (car won't roll) | +£65 flat |
| Congestion zone pickup | +£25 |
| Night rate, 23:00-07:00 | 1.5x standard fare |
The base price includes the first 3 miles. Beyond that, the mileage rate increases with distance, and you see the running total in the app before you confirm, never after. Every driver is DBS-checked and carries motor trade, hire-and-reward and public liability insurance, and average arrival in covered cities is 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic and how many drivers are nearby.
The same fixed pricing applies everywhere TowManVan covers, but each of the UK's ten biggest cities has its own dedicated page with local coverage and arrival details.
No membership, no haggling, no surprise charges. Enter your details and get a fixed price in the app, locked in before a driver is sent.
