Fixed price, no membership, no haggling

Cheap Car Recovery, Priced Honestly From £70

We won't pretend TowManVan will always beat a local driver haggling in cash on the roadside, sometimes it won't. What it does offer is a fixed price you see before a truck is even dispatched, roughly half the cost of a non-member AA or RAC callout, and no annual membership fee to pay for cover you might not use.

£70

~50%
less than an AA/RAC non-member callout
Cheap car recovery with TowManVan starts at £70 for a car under 1300kg, £75 for 1300-1600kg, £85 over 1600kg, and £120 for a van, fixed in the app before a driver is sent. There's no annual membership to buy, and a non-member AA or RAC callout typically costs £150-£250 or more for the same job.

Is TowManVan actually the cheapest option?

Sometimes, no, and it's worth being upfront about that. A random local operator who answers the phone and agrees a cash price there and then can, on a good day, undercut any fixed-price platform, because he isn't disclosing a rate card, he's just naming a number. What TowManVan trades that possibility for is certainty: the price you see in the app before you confirm is the price you pay, whoever turns up and whatever the traffic is doing.

What you're weighing upTowManVanCash-in-hand local driver
Price known before the truck arrives
Can be haggled down on the day
Can also be pushed up once your car is hooked up
DBS-checked driver, verified insurance
Price shown in the app, no cash-only surprise
Live tracking and 24/7 availability

Fixed pricing is a genuine trade-off: you give up the small chance of talking someone down, in exchange for never being talked up once your car is already on the truck.

The real cost comparison: membership vs pay-as-you-go

The honest way to judge "cheap" is over a full year, not one callout. Here's what each option actually costs once the annual fee, if there is one, is added back in.

OptionWhat you payThe catch
AA/RAC annual membershipRoughly £150-£200+ a year, every yearCharged whether or not you ever break down, and some tiers still add fees for a full recovery rather than a roadside fix
AA/RAC callout, no membershipCommonly £150-£250 for a single jobA one-off price, but usually double or more what TowManVan charges for the same tow
TowManVan, pay only when needed£70-£120 fixed, per jobNothing to pay in the months you don't break down, and no joining fee to get started

If you break down two or three times a year, membership can work out ahead. If it's rare, once every few years, paying only when it happens is usually the cheaper path, and it's the one with no annual bill either way.

How to keep your recovery cost as low as possible

The fixed price can't be haggled, but it isn't fixed regardless of the situation either. Three things are genuinely within your control.

Keep the distance short
The first few miles are included in the base price. The further your car needs to travel, the more the mileage rate adds on top, so a local tow stays closest to the headline figure.
Let it roll if you safely can
The £65 skates fee only applies when the car genuinely can't be rolled onto the truck, a seized wheel, a gearbox stuck out of neutral, or a handbrake that won't release. If it rolls freely, you skip this charge completely.
Avoid the night window if it isn't urgent
Jobs between 23:00 and 07:00 are charged at 1.5x the standard fare. If your car is somewhere safe and legal and isn't blocking anyone, waiting until morning can noticeably cut the bill.

One thing that won't affect a recovery booking either way: the day of the week. Unlike man-and-van or removals jobs, there's no weekend surcharge on car recovery.

The full price breakdown

ItemPrice
Car under 1300kg£70
Car 1300-1600kg£75
Car over 1600kg£85
Van or minibus£120
Skates fee (car won't roll)+£65 flat
Congestion zone pickup+£25
Night rate, 23:00-07:001.5x standard fare

The base price includes the first 3 miles. Beyond that, the mileage rate increases with distance, and you see the running total in the app before you confirm, never after. Every driver is DBS-checked and carries motor trade, hire-and-reward and public liability insurance, and average arrival in covered cities is 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic and how many drivers are nearby.
