This motorway runs east from Cadnam on the edge of the New Forest to the M275 junction at Fareham, passing Southampton, its airport and the string of towns along the Solent shore. There is no J6, which surprises people following older directions. Twelve numbered junctions in a relatively short distance make it a busy, junction-dense road rather than an open run, and coverage extends across all of it.
Southampton's port sits immediately off this corridor, generating container freight, car carriers and cruise passenger traffic in equal measure. Freight drivers run to ship cut-offs; cruise passengers arrive with a boot full of luggage and a hire car they picked up that morning. Both groups produce fuel calls. Diesel for lorries comes in port-sized amounts, and the gear copes with fillers mounted well up. Vehicle carriers and box traffic keep this corridor working long after the commuter peak has drained away.
At Chilworth the M3 arrives from Winchester and the north, tipping its traffic directly onto this corridor. Drivers arriving that way have committed to the Solent corridor and passed their last easy fuel stop some distance back. The same applies in reverse to anyone leaving for the M3 with the light already lit. Interchange link roads at J4 are covered on the same fixed rate as the main carriageways.
J1 and J2 sit at the edge of the New Forest, and in summer they carry a heavy flow of visitors, caravans and motorhomes. Outfits on tow drink far more than their drivers expect, and the surrounding forest lanes hold nothing that trades late. Bookings from towing vehicles are handled without unhitching, and the extra length is expected if you note it. Ponies, unlit lanes and a booked crossing make the western end an awkward spot to go hunting for a pump.
The airport exit brings hire cars and drop-off traffic onto the corridor, with the familiar pattern of unfamiliar vehicles and deliberately run-down tanks before a return. Add the circulating that goes with waiting for an arrival and the margin gets thin quickly. Cover on the approach roads and links around J5 is standard at every hour, because flights ignore the working day. Early departures put cars onto the approach roads before most local forecourts have unlocked their doors.
With junctions so close together, drivers assume fuel is always a minute away. It is not. Several of these exits lead to residential areas or business parks rather than forecourts, and some offer only partial access. Choosing an exit badly on a low tank can add miles you do not have. A roadside drop ends the guessing by delivering to whichever side you already occupy.
Sections of this corridor have been reworked, and the availability of a continuous hard shoulder is not uniform along its length. Where a running lane replaces the shoulder, the correct move if the engine stops is to Sit still, strapped in, hazards going and call 999 for a lane closure rather than stepping out. Operators work behind the closure once it has been signed. Watch the overhead signals as you slow, because a red X ahead changes what you should do next.
Beyond J11, traffic sorts itself towards Fareham, Gosport and the Portsmouth ferries by way of the M275. Anyone with a sailing booked is working to a deadline, which is when the fuel stop gets skipped. The junction links at J12 are within coverage, as are the approaches, so a stop at that end of the road is handled the same as one out at Cadnam.
Where you have stopped does not change the figure. A job at J2 out in the New Forest costs what a job at J12 near Fareham costs, whatever the hour or the date. No membership is needed in advance and no attendance charge follows. Arrival within thirty minutes is what crews target; the price settles in the app before the callout goes live, and the map then follows the vehicle in.
