Fuel Delivery in M50 - What You Need to Know

01

The Ross Spur from J1 to J4

The M50 leaves the M5 near Strensham and runs west for roughly twenty two miles to J4 at Ross-on-Wye, where the A40 carries on towards Monmouth and South Wales. Four junctions in total, all of them rural. It is a bridge between two big road networks rather than a road anybody lives beside, and traffic on it is overwhelmingly making a much longer journey. That shapes every fuel problem that happens here.

02

A road from 1960, and it shows

Opened at the start of the sixties as the Ross Spur, this is one of the oldest stretches of motorway in Britain still carrying traffic. Two running lanes in each direction, an unbroken hard shoulder, no overhead gantries and no variable signage. The shoulder is a real benefit when something goes wrong, since there is always somewhere to put the vehicle. The lack of everything else is what makes an empty tank awkward.

03

There is nowhere to fill up

No service area exists anywhere along this motorway. From the moment you join at one end until you leave at the other, there is no fuel, no shop and nothing to walk to. Twenty two miles is not far in the abstract, but it is a long way to push a car, and it is a very long way if the warning light came on before you joined. Fill up beforehand.

04

J1 and the handover from the M5

At the eastern end the spur meets the M5 close to Strensham, which is where most westbound drivers make their last realistic fuel decision without knowing it. The signs point at Ross and Wales and the distance looks small, so the stop gets skipped. Anyone joining here with the warning light already showing should think again, because nothing further west will help until the far end of the road.

05

J2 for Ledbury and the A417

J2 puts traffic onto the A417 for Ledbury and the Malvern side of Herefordshire. It is the only meaningful bail out point in the middle of the road, and the fuel options beyond it are in the town rather than at the junction itself. Drivers who limp off here sometimes stop on the slip before they reach anything useful, and those slips are covered exactly as the main carriageway is.

06

J3 and the Newent side

J3 is a quiet junction serving the Newent direction and the lanes of north Gloucestershire. Traffic using it is mostly local, and the road here runs through farmland with very little around. A car that stops on this stretch is genuinely isolated by motorway standards, so keeping the hazard lights on and standing behind the barrier matters even though the traffic looks light. The verge is often soft after rain.

07

J4 Ross-on-Wye and the road into Wales

The western end drops onto the A40 and A449 at Ross-on-Wye, splitting traffic between Monmouth and South Wales one way and Hereford the other. Eastbound drivers joining here are starting a run with no facilities in front of them until the M5, which catches out people who assumed a motorway meant motorway services. Fill up in Ross before you join if the gauge is anywhere near the bottom.

08

Quiet, rural and dark

After the evening rush this road empties out. There is no lighting along the rural sections, the verges are deep and the surrounding country is unlit farmland, so a stopped car at midnight is hard to spot until traffic is close. Keep the hazards running for the whole wait, get everybody over the barrier, and stand well back up the road from the vehicle rather than alongside it.

09

Holiday and weekend flows to Wales

On Friday evenings and bank holiday mornings the spur carries a surge of traffic heading for the Wye valley, the Brecon Beacons and the South Wales coast. Loaded cars, roof boxes and towed caravans all use more than their owners expect, and this is the last motorway many of them see before a long stretch of A road. The arrival goal is half an hour or better, at the same price whatever the day.
