Opened in December 2003, the M6 Toll is a separate charged route running from the M42 near Coleshill in the south to the M6 above Cannock in the north, bypassing the congested stretch through the West Midlands conurbation. Junctions are lettered T1 through T8 rather than numbered like the free road. Drivers choose it deliberately, pay for it, and then generally stay on it right to the end.
At the southern tip traffic arrives from the M42 and commits to the charged route. That commitment is the whole issue: local forecourts reachable from the free network are behind you, and what lies ahead is a road with a single service area on it. Anyone joining at T1 with a low gauge should weigh whether the time saved is worth the risk of stopping on it.
The northern terminus feeds back onto the M6 for the run towards Stafford, Stoke and the north west. Drivers coming south onto the charged route here have just left a motorway with plenty of facilities, and drivers leaving northbound are about to join one. Either way, the junction is where the decision gets made, and it gets made quickly because the traffic is moving well.
Norton Canes is the only service area on the charged route, sitting between the middle junctions and reachable from both carriageways. Miss it, and there is nothing else until you are off the road entirely. Because the route runs quietly compared with the free motorway, drivers cover the distance faster than expected and pass the site without registering it was their one chance.
Mainline plazas sit near each end, and queuing at a barrier with a nearly empty tank is a poor combination. Traffic is stationary, engines are running, and there is nowhere to pull over inside the plaza area. If the engine cuts in a lane there, hazards on and stay with the vehicle until staff direct you, then book from whichever spot you end up in.
Choosing this route is a time calculation made at speed, usually on the approach to a junction, and fuel rarely enters into it. Once the decision is taken, turning round is not practical and the free road is no longer available. That is the single most common story behind a call from this motorway: the choice was right, the tank was never checked.
Charging is banded by vehicle class, and the heaviest vehicles pay the most, which pushes a good share of freight onto the free route. What is left is a mix of cars, light vans and drivers in a hurry. That shapes the calls: petrol requests are proportionally more common here than on the freight corridors, and misfuel jobs turn up regularly.
If the M6 through the conurbation closes for an incident, traffic is diverted onto the charged route in volume, and a normally quiet road fills up. Sitting in that diverted queue is exactly how a comfortable tank becomes a marginal one. Cover continues through those events without any change to the price or the terms. Booking early rather than waiting for the queue to clear is the better call.
Being on a tolled route makes no difference to what a delivery costs: there is no access fee, no plaza surcharge and no separate charge for coming through a barrier. Bookings can be placed at any hour, all year. Arrival is targeted at under thirty minutes, with cones and compliant lighting placed before anyone approaches the stopped vehicle.
