Pull onto the hard shoulder, empty the car through the passenger side and climb behind the barrier. Three miles is the whole of the M271, and unlike the M27 it feeds, every metre of it has a shoulder to stop on. Emergency tyre fitting here begins at £120 with the tyre included.
Conventional throughout. A hard shoulder runs the full three miles, there is no all-lane running, and no overhead lane signals. Turn east at M27 J3 and the converted section begins one junction later. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.
Steer onto the hard shoulder, then everybody climbs out on the passenger side and waits behind the barrier. Report it to National Highways, 0300 123 5000, or dial 999 if somebody is trapped or the car stopped in a lane. Tyre fitting on the M271 costs from £120, tyre included.
Three miles is all there is of the M271. It leaves the Redbridge roundabout on the A33 beside Totton, passes J1 at Nursling, crosses the M27 at J3 and finishes on the A3057. It exists for one purpose: moving dock traffic between the motorway network and the Southampton container terminals.
That gives it a lopsided vehicle mix. Loaded artics share three miles of tarmac with Totton and Romsey commuters, and the carriageway drops from three lanes to two past J1. Heavy vehicles and cars sorting themselves out that quickly is what puts wheels near kerbs and rubbish in the nearside lane.
M271 Southampton Docks spur, 3 miles, Redbridge roundabout to the A3057 at Nursling, via J1 and M27 J3, through Hampshire, on the western edge of Southampton between Totton, Nursling and Millbrook.
The southern end, where the A33 link opened in 2019 peels traffic towards the terminals. Tight geometry and lorries taking the inside line push nearside wheels onto kerbs, and a kerbed sidewall means a new tyre rather than a plug.
Northbound the carriageway loses a lane shortly after Nursling. Merging traffic squeezes towards the nearside, which is exactly where grit, wire and shed load gather.
Every vehicle here either joins or leaves the M27. Short links crossed at very different speeds are how sidewalls get cut, and the debris load runs higher than three miles would suggest.
If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.
| Service area | Between |

Every figure here covers getting to you and doing the work, so no callout is added afterwards. The tyre is passed on at cost and appears on screen before you agree. Overnight, 23:00 to 07:00, everything is charged at 1.5x the base rate, stated up front since 24 hour tyre fitting on the M271 has to price the small hours honestly.
| Service | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile tyre change, supply and fit | From £120 | Plus the tyre at cost. This road sits inside Southampton's trade parts network, and Nursling and Millbrook stock most everyday sizes. |
| Fit the spare you already carry | From £80 | Where something usable is already on board. Over three miles a spare will often reach a garage in Totton or Shirley under your own power. |
| Puncture repair | From £60 | Offered when the hole falls in the repairable central band under BS AU159 with legal tread left. A Redbridge kerb strike rules it out. |
| Locking wheel nut removal | From £70 | For a key gone missing or rounded off. Removal without cutting is tried wherever the head has shape left to grip. |
Ease off instead of braking hard, keep the car pointed straight and let it roll onto the hard shoulder, which runs the entire length here. Get well over and steer the front wheels into the verge.
Hazards first, then out on the nearside, driver last. With loaded lorries running past, the offside is not somewhere to stand even briefly. Wait behind the barrier and ahead of the vehicle.
Tell National Highways where you are on 0300 123 5000, or use a free orange SOS phone if one is close. Dial 999 first if anybody cannot get out or the car sits in a live lane.
No overhead signals exist here. Join the M27 and pass J4 and you meet them: a red X above a lane closes it to every vehicle, and the emergency areas standing in for the hard shoulder carry a blue sign showing an orange telephone.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
Loaded artics running between the terminals and the wider network dominate the freight side. A failed lorry casing sheds tread that ruins the next car tyre to find it.
The estates either side put loaded vans on the road all day. Van tyres carry C ratings, and over-inflating to cope with weight wears a bald strip down the centre while the shoulders still look healthy.
Low ground beside the Test drains poorly, and salt attacks the rim where a tyre seals against it. A leak appearing in January is often bead corrosion rather than anything sharp.
Cruise turnarounds and container volume both climb, so freight density rises with them. More heavy miles leaves more shed tread for cars to find.
There are no services on the M271: no fuel, no food, nowhere to stop properly. Rownhams, on the M27 just east of J3, is the closest, and a car park beats a hard shoulder with dock traffic beside it.
Off the motorway, the Nursling and Millbrook estates and the retail parks at Totton and Shirley are lit and roomy enough to work in. Arrival is quoted as a target rather than a promise, worked out from where the accepting operator is.
Only the centre portion of the tread counts, three quarters of its width, and 1.6mm has to hold right round the tyre. Wear bars moulded into the grooves sit at that depth, so tread level with them means you are at the limit.
Each bad tyre is its own charge: £2,500 at most, plus three points, for every one. Separately, a bulge, split or exposed cord fails the MOT on its own, regardless of tread, which is what the Redbridge kerbs produce.
Yes. The road is conventional along its full three miles and keeps a shoulder, so roadside work is possible where the spot is safe. The M27 east of J4 is a different matter.
National Highways, 0300 123 5000, to report where you stopped, or a free orange SOS phone if one is nearby. Use 999 first if anyone is trapped or you are sitting in a live lane.
No offence is committed by doing it, but National Highways advise against it, and here it means kneeling with your back to loaded dock traffic. A shoulder makes the job possible, not wise.
From £120 including the tyre, from £80 if you already carry a usable spare, and £60 to repair one where the damage permits. No callout is added. The base rate rises by half in the 23:00 to 07:00 window, and the tyre is billed at what it costs.
That cannot happen on the M271, which has one everywhere. Once you join the M27 and turn east, all-lane running starts at J4: make for the nearest emergency area, and ring 999 if you cannot reach it. Those bays are placed at intervals along such sections.
None whatsoever. No fuel, no food, no motorway services across the whole three miles. Rownhams on the M27, just east of J3, is the nearest place worth aiming for.
Your location comes from GPS, so you do not have to read a marker post. The price is fixed before you confirm and you track the fitter in.
iOS and Android from the 1st of October 2026. No membership, no annual fee and no account charge. You only pay when you book a job.
The fixed price is shown before you confirm, not after the work. Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay are handled in-app, so no cash changes hands at the kerb.
Once a job is accepted you see the driver's name, vehicle and live position on the map, with an arrival time that updates as they travel.
Every operator is DBS checked, insured for hire and reward, and rated after each job. Prices are fixed before dispatch, never quoted as a range.
Own a van or recovery truck? Take jobs through the same appFitters already working the Nursling, Millbrook and Totton estates are minutes away, and the dock traffic this road exists to carry runs at every hour. Fitters keep 90 percent of every job for their first twelve months, with no joining fee, no weekly subscription, no bidding and no charge for jobs you decline. You set your own radius and hours. We are signing up fitters along the M271 ahead of the 1st of October 2026 launch.
