Get as far onto the narrow verge as the car will go, then everybody out on the passenger side. The M275 was built without a hard shoulder for all two miles of it, so there is no refuge between the M27 and Portsmouth. Tyre fitting here starts from £120 with the tyre in the price.
Not a smart motorway: no overhead lane signals, no emergency areas. No hard shoulder either, because the road was never built with one, and signs at the entrance warn of none for two miles. Get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave by the nearside doors, stand behind the barrier up the embankment, and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you cannot get out of the vehicle. They can close the lane above you from the control room. Book a fitter once you are behind a barrier, never before. Full guidance is on National Highways.
Pull as far left onto the verge as you can, then get everyone out through the nearside and away from the carriageway. Dial 999 if you cannot clear the vehicle. National Highways take motorway reports on 0300 123 5000. Tyre fitting on the M275 starts from £120 including the tyre.
Two miles of dual three-lane road connect the M27 at J12 to the edge of Portsmouth city centre, and that is the whole M275. It passes J1 at Tipner, where the park and ride sits, and ends at J2 on the A3 and A2047 beside Rudmore. The limit is 60mph.
What marks this road out is what it lacks. No full hard shoulder was ever built, and drivers joining are warned by sign. Unlike a converted motorway there are no emergency areas and no gantry signals either, so a tyre failing between Tipner and Rudmore leaves you on inches of verge.
M275 Portsmouth spur, 2 miles, M27 J12 to J2 at the A3 and A2047, via J1 Tipner, through Hampshire, running onto Portsea Island and into Portsmouth.
Most roads have a worst stretch. Here all two miles are, since none was built to stop on. A deflating tyre leaves a choice between the verge and pressing on, and the junctions are close enough that pressing on wins.
Buses and cars join and leave at the park and ride, putting slow traffic into the nearside lane of a 60mph road. Braking on cold rubber and kerbing on the slips both show up here.
Ferry traffic for the Isle of Wight and the continent funnels through J2, mixing packed cars with port lorries. Overloaded cars and lorries shedding tread meet here.
If you can reach a service area safely, do. A fitter can work on you in a car park with no live traffic alongside, which is both faster and far safer than a hard shoulder.

Reaching you is already inside these prices, so no callout fee is charged separately. Whatever the tyre costs is what you pay, itemised on screen before you confirm. Work booked after 23:00 and before 07:00 is charged at 1.5 times the base rate, the open cost of 24 hour tyre fitting on the M275.
| Service | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile tyre change, supply and fit | From £120 | Plus the tyre at cost. Portsmouth has plenty of trade supply, so ordinary sizes rarely have to come from off the island. |
| Fit the spare you already carry | From £80 | Where a serviceable spare is already aboard. With nowhere here to stop properly, rolling again quickly is worth more. |
| Puncture repair | From £60 | Only if the hole sits within the central repairable region described in BS AU159 and the tread is still legal. Sidewall damage never qualifies. |
| Locking wheel nut removal | From £70 | When the key is missing or its splines have worn away. A method preserving the nut comes first, and the wheel is torqued afterwards. |
| TPMS sensor replacement | From £60 | One price for each sensor, coded to your car on the spot. Vehicles registered from around 2014 almost all carry them. |
| Recovery if it cannot be fitted | From £70 | With no shoulder anywhere here, this is used more often than on a conventional motorway. The vehicle is taken somewhere secure and fitted there. |
Come off the power without braking hard. These two miles hold three exits, and reaching one beats a verge never meant to hold a car. If you must stop, get both nearside wheels off the running surface.
Hazards on, then the driver climbs across and out of the passenger door with everyone else. Three lanes pass a metre from the offside, so nobody uses it.
If anyone is trapped inside or the car has halted in a running lane, 999 comes first. Otherwise report the stop to National Highways on 0300 123 5000. There are no free orange SOS phones on this spur, so use a mobile.
Without a shoulder anywhere, roadside work is often not the safe answer, so the usual sequence is recovery to somewhere secure, from £70, and fitting done there. Rejoin the M27 westbound and all-lane running begins at J11, where a red X over a lane closes it and blue signs with an orange telephone mark the emergency areas.
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, and the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. A fitter cannot legally refit a tyre below that, which is why a worn tyre becomes a replacement rather than a repair.
Portsmouth International Port sends cars to the Isle of Wight, France and the Channel Islands, and nearly all arrive this way. A packed car needs the higher pressure the door pillar quotes for a full load.
Beyond the ferries this is the main way onto Portsea Island for commuters, the dockyard and the naval base. Short urban trips never warm tyres through, so a slow leak hides until the car is loaded.
Crossings run at capacity through the holidays and cars arrive at their heaviest. Heat and weight produce sudden failures rather than gradual ones, since the trip ends long before a leak shows on the dashboard.
The road runs beside open water on reclaimed ground, and salt-laden air works on wheel rims. Corrosion where the tyre seals causes leaks that look like punctures but are not.
Nothing sits on the M275 itself: no services, no fuel, no lay-bys. The best places to work are the Tipner park and ride at J1, which is lit and holds several hundred spaces, the retail sites around Rudmore, and Port Solent across the M27 at J12.
One quirk worth knowing is that Portsmouth City Council maintains this road, not National Highways, from where the M27 slips end. That changes nothing in an emergency, but the stretch is run as a city road wearing motorway rules. Arrival is always a target.
The limit covers the central band of the tread, three quarters of the way across, and applies right round the wheel. Moulded ridges in the grooves mark that depth, and once the tread meets them the tyre has reached the end of its legal life.
The fine tops out at £2,500 per illegal tyre with three points beside it, counted for each wheel, so a full set reaches a ban. A bulge or a cut deep enough to show cords fails the MOT instantly whatever the gauge reads.
No. The road was built without one along all two miles, and signs at the entry say so. There is a narrow verge and nothing else, so roadside fitting is often not safe here and the car is recovered to a secure spot instead.
999 straight away if somebody is trapped inside or the car has halted in a lane. Otherwise National Highways cover motorway incidents on 0300 123 5000.
It is not an offence, but here it is close to unworkable. Changing a wheel needs room beside the car, and this road offers inches of verge with three lanes passing at 60mph.
From £120 with the tyre supplied, from £80 if a spare is aboard, £60 for a repair where one is possible, and from £70 for recovery when fitting on site is unsafe. Nothing sits on top as a callout. After 23:00 the rate is one and a half times the base until 07:00.
Aim for an exit if the car still rolls. Two miles hold three junctions, and the Tipner park and ride at J1 is a genuinely good place to end up. If nowhere is reachable, put both nearside wheels onto the verge, clear the car on the passenger side and stand behind the fence line.

Own a van or recovery truck? Take jobs through the same appTwo miles of motorway with nowhere to stop needs fitters who know Tipner, Rudmore and the port approaches, on an island city small enough that local knowledge counts double. Fitters keep 90 percent of every job for their first twelve months, with no joining fee, no weekly subscription, no bidding and no charge for jobs you decline. You set your own radius and hours. We are signing up fitters along the M275 ahead of the 1st of October 2026 launch.
