This motorway starts at Chiswick and finishes at Pont Abraham in Carmarthenshire, crossing the Thames valley, the Severn and the whole of south Wales on the way. Junction numbering runs to J49, though not every number exists. Very few drivers use the entire length, but almost everyone who uses part of it is travelling a long way. Coverage extends across the route, both carriageways, at fixed pricing.
J4 serves Heathrow, and the traffic around it includes hire cars, cargo vehicles and a constant flow of people going round again on the approach roads waiting for arrivals. Running a rental down to nothing before returning it is standard practice, and it goes wrong often enough to keep operators busy. Airport-area bookings run at all hours, because the airport does not observe office hours and neither does the cover.
A long section west of London operates without a continuous hard shoulder, with emergency areas instead. They are spaced further apart than drivers assume when they suddenly need one. Should the engine cut out between them, published advice is to stay belted with hazards lit and dial 999 for a closure, not to step into moving lanes. That section carries very heavy weekday volumes, which makes a live lane an especially poor place to be sitting.
J13 is where the A34 crosses, carrying freight between Southampton and the Midlands. It is one of several points on this route where drivers commit to a long onward run, and where the last easy fuel opportunity gets passed while attention is on the interchange. The same happens at the M25 links, at the M5 at Almondsbury and at the M32 split for Bristol. Each of those points marks the end of easy choices for anybody who has been putting the stop off.
The estuary crossing sits wide open, and a hard blow there works vans, box bodies and towed outfits far harder than anything inland. Restrictions on high-sided vehicles come into force in strong weather. A range figure earned on sheltered Wiltshire miles collapses over the water, and the lamp tends to arrive precisely as choices run short. Once committed to the bridge there is nowhere to reconsider until the far side, and the far side is where the calls originate.
West of the crossing the road passes Newport, where the carriageways run through tunnels, before continuing past Cardiff, Bridgend, Port Talbot and Swansea. Traffic through the Newport section is dense and slow at peak times, and stopping in a tunnel is a scenario with its own procedures. If a problem develops as you approach one, deal with it before you enter rather than after. Peak traffic through that stretch moves slowly enough to burn fuel without covering much ground at all.
Beyond Swansea the road runs on to Pont Abraham, feeding the routes towards Pembrokeshire and the Irish Sea ferries. Drivers on that leg are working to sailing times, the junction spacing opens out and the fuel provision thins compared with the Welsh valleys section. A tank that seemed fine at Cardiff can be uncomfortable by the western end of the route. Missing a sailing over an empty tank is an expensive way to learn how far apart the exits are.
The stretch through Port Talbot carries a substantial volume of industrial traffic, with heavy vehicles joining and leaving at hours set by shift patterns rather than daylight. Diesel for heavy vehicles turns up in lorry amounts, and the equipment handles fillers positioned well above head height. Note the vehicle class in the booking and the right kit travels out with the operator. Shift changes tip a burst of heavy vehicles onto the carriageway at hours when the surrounding roads are dead.
Where you stop does not change what you pay. A job near Reading costs what a job near Swansea costs, whatever the hour and whatever the date. No scheme has to exist beforehand, and no attendance charge trails the visit. The standing aim is under thirty minutes to your position, with the price confirmed before dispatch and live tracking afterwards. Distance from a depot never enters the calculation, and nor does the day of the week.
Same fixed price across every area. No postcode surcharge.
